As part of its road safety measures, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) and National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) have embarked on a two-day speed awareness campaign in Kumasi.
The campaign was adopted to reduce road crashes which have been identified as a serious public health concern in the country.
After taking the drivers through the necessary education on speed awareness, they were given stickers on the campaign to post on their windscreens.
This campaign, which started on Tuesday, saw the team visiting some of the main intra-city bus terminals in the Central Business District like the Melcom – Ahodwo Station, Boss FM – Tech, Kotei, Prudential – Atasemanso, PZ- Danyame, RCC taxi rank and PZ Cargo station.
Other places which were visited included Unibank – Bantama, Adum Prisons-Daban, and Central Market to Ejisu stretch stations.
Mr Sam Pyne, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, in a remark at the Asafo VIP said he led the campaign to show how serious the KMA and himself as the Mayor of the City were determined to educate the populace to embrace the campaign to reduce road crashes at the local and national levels and also to prioritize road safety.
Mr Pyne charged the drivers to see road safety as their civic duty where they owe the public an obligation to drive carefully and strictly adhere to road traffic regulations.
He added that the economic burden that road crash victims bring to the nation and their family was huge, hence, the time to act is now.
