Approximately 2,000 apprentices in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region are set to benefit from the government’s National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP), an initiative designed to equip young people with practical vocational skills and reduce youth unemployment across the country.

The programme, introduced under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, seeks to create sustainable employment opportunities for Ghanaian youth by providing structured skills training in various vocational fields.

The National Apprenticeship Programme is supported by a government allocation of GH¢300 million and is expected to provide training opportunities for thousands of young people nationwide. Under the initiative, beneficiaries will undertake either short-term vocational training programmes lasting between two and four months or long-term apprenticeship training spanning between 12 and 18 months, depending on the specific trade and level of expertise required.

Participants in the programme will receive hands-on training from experienced artisans and industry professionals in selected trades. Upon successful completion of the training, beneficiaries will be provided with modern working tools and equipment to help them establish their own businesses or strengthen their existing vocations. In addition, trainees will be awarded certificates recognizing their skills and competence in their respective fields.

The Ashanti Regional Coordinator of the programme, Patrick Opoku Fofie, explained that the initiative has been carefully structured to combine practical vocational training with financial and logistical support to ensure that beneficiaries can successfully transition into self-employment.

According to him, the programme also incorporates strong accountability measures to guarantee transparency in the management of funds. He disclosed that all payments under the programme are processed directly through the Bank of Ghana to eliminate the involvement of intermediaries and minimize the risk of financial mismanagement.

Mr. Opoku Fofie further indicated that the programme is targeted at unemployed and underemployed youth, including school dropouts, senior high school graduates, tertiary graduates seeking practical skills, and individuals already working in the informal sector who wish to upgrade their vocational competencies. He added that special encouragement has been given to women and persons living with disabilities to take advantage of the initiative.

Speaking on the implementation of the programme in the district, the District Chief Executive for Ahafo Ano South West, Abubakar Sedik, revealed that the district is expected to record about 2,000 beneficiaries under the National Apprenticeship Programme.

He advised applicants who have already submitted their application forms but are yet to receive their equipment or machinery to exercise patience, explaining that the initiative is currently being rolled out in phases as part of a pilot implementation process.

According to the District Chief Executive, individuals who are not captured in the first phase of the programme will be considered in subsequent stages to ensure that more youth in the district have the opportunity to benefit from the initiative.

Some beneficiaries who have already been selected expressed their appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the District Chief Executive for introducing the programme. They described the initiative as a timely intervention that will significantly improve their livelihoods and enable them to expand their work in various trades.

The National Apprenticeship Programme is widely regarded as a strategic intervention aimed at empowering young people with practical skills, promoting entrepreneurship, and strengthening the country’s informal sector while addressing the persistent challenge of youth unemployment in Ghana.
