Wioso SHS Marks 10th Anniversary, Appeals for Infrastructural Intervention to Boost Quality Education

Wioso Senior High School (Alma Mater Education),  established by the charity  Alma Mater Education has marked its 10th anniversary with a renewed and passionate appeal for urgent government and stakeholder intervention to address critical infrastructural challenges that continue to hinder effective teaching and learning.

Located in the Ahafo Ano South-West District of the Ashanti Region, the school has over the years operated with inadequate facilities, including limited classroom space, the absence of a science laboratory, lack of teachers’ accommodation, insufficient teaching and learning materials, and no school bus to support academic and extracurricular activities. These constraints have placed significant pressure on both staff and students, particularly in the area of science education, where the lack of a laboratory has affected practical learning and overall performance.

Speaking during the anniversary celebration, the Director of External Relations and Special Projects, Mr. Dennis Oduro Akomeah, expressed deep concern over the persistent infrastructural gaps that have challenged the school since its establishment. He noted that teachers continue to sacrifice greatly to ensure that students receive quality education despite the overwhelming constraints.

“Without a well-equipped science laboratory and with overcrowded classrooms, our students are unable to undertake the practical learning that is essential for academic excellence. These challenges undermine the dedication of our hardworking teachers and negatively affect student outcomes,” he emphasized. Mr. Akomeah, however, acknowledged government efforts, especially the recent decision to absorb the school into the public education system, describing it as a significant relief that will strengthen the school’s operations.

Delivering the keynote address, the District Chief Executive for Ahafo Ano South-West, Hon. Abubakar Sedik, commended the Toni Gann Foundation, school authorities, staff, chiefs, and the entire Wioso community for their unwavering commitment to promoting education in the district. He described the celebration as a testament to the resilience and determination of the school over the past decade.

The DCE announced that following a visit by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, on 29th May 2025, the Ministry of Education had approved the absorption of Wioso Senior High School into the public school system alongside five other private institutions. He revealed that once the final administrative processes are completed, 49 teaching and non-teaching staff will be officially placed on the government payroll, a development he described as a major boost to the school’s sustainability.

Hon. Sedik further indicated that he had personally petitioned the Minister of Education for a school bus and the construction of teachers’ quarters to address the accommodation challenges that discourage educators from accepting postings to rural areas. He encouraged students to stay focused, take their studies seriously, and make the most of the opportunities ahead of them.

The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South-West, Hon. Elvis Dapaah, who also attended the event, donated 10 laptops to support the establishment of a science laboratory. He praised the school’s founders, local leaders, and expatriate partners who played key roles in establishing the institution, noting that their sacrifices had yielded impressive results within just a decade.

“The increasing student population is an indication of the trust and confidence the community has in this school. I urge residents to continue supporting the institution and to avoid politicizing government initiatives aimed at improving development in this area,” the MP stated. He reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating closely with traditional authorities and stakeholders to prioritize developmental projects that benefit the people of Ahafo Ano South-West.

The celebration brought together chiefs, parents, education stakeholders, development partners, and past students, who all pledged to support the next phase of the school’s growth.

As Wioso Senior High School marks 10 years of existence, management, students, and stakeholders remain hopeful that the coming years will bring improved infrastructure, stronger educational partnerships, and enhanced learning opportunities that will elevate the school into a model institution within the district and the region at large.
