Tension is running high in the Manso Tontokrom community of the Amansie South District in the Ashanti Region following the deployment of more than 100 heavily armed soldiers, allegedly in support of Asanko Gold Mines.

The military presence has sparked outrage among residents, who accuse the mining company of using security forces to intimidate them and take control of lands they claim as ancestral property. According to locals, this is the latest escalation in a bitter dispute that has dragged on for years, leaving a trail of injuries, deaths, and mistrust.

Community leaders insist that Tontokrom residents have farmed and worked these lands for generations, yet their rights have been undermined by corporate interests. They accuse Asanko Gold Mines of leveraging state power to suppress resistance and enforce its operations.

Nyarko Isaac, a prominent youth leader in Manso Tontokrom, voiced the community’s anger when speaking to journalists early Saturday. “There is no way the community will rest for Asanko Mining to take over our land,” Isaac declared. He claimed previous encounters with military personnel deployed in the area had resulted in deaths and severe injuries, saying the community feels “under siege.”

Isaac also questioned why Asanko Gold Mines has chosen to escalate tensions despite assurances by the Ashanti Regional Minister, who met with community representatives just four days ago and promised to escalate their grievances to the Presidency for a fair resolution.

Residents have vowed to resist what they describe as oppression and corporate greed, warning that they will defend their rights to their land regardless of the intimidation they face.

This latest flashpoint in Tontokrom highlights a growing challenge across Ghana’s mining regions, where disputes between large-scale mining companies and local communities frequently lead to violence and instability. Analysts have long called for clearer land and mining policies that protect local communities while promoting responsible investment.

As of Saturday evening, the heavily armed military presence in Tontokrom had created a climate of fear and uncertainty, with residents demanding immediate government intervention to de-escalate tensions and ensure justice.
