“‘We Are Suffering in Silence’: Nkontomire Residents Demand Immediate Government Support”

Residents of Nkontomiri in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region are making a desperate appeal to government authorities to turn their attention to the community, which they say has been trapped in poverty and neglect for decades.

With no mobile network, poor roads, a dilapidated school building, and no access to clean water, the residents say their daily lives are marked by hardship, frustration, and danger.

In an interview with the several residents expressed pain over the long-standing lack of development. “We are suffering in silence. Nobody sees us, nobody hears us. But we are also citizens of Ghana. Don’t we deserve roads? Don’t we deserve good schools for our children?” one resident questioned.

One of the most distressing issues facing the community is the lack of mobile network coverage. According to residents, they are completely cut off from telecommunication services, leaving them unable to make calls or access the internet—especially critical during emergencies.

“We feel isolated. When someone is sick or there’s an emergency, we can’t even call for help. We sometimes have to walk miles to find a signal,” another resident revealed.

The only basic school serving the community has become a symbol of neglect.

the school is now in a severe state of disrepair. With no doors, windows, or fencing, the school is exposed to intruders and bad weather, putting both teachers and students at risk.

“Our children sit in broken classrooms to learn. This is not fair to them. How can they compete with children from other parts of the country?” a parent lamented.

The roads leading to Nkontomiri are also in deplorable condition, worsening the already difficult lives of the residents. Drivers charge high transport fares due to the risks posed by the pothole-ridden roads, and in some cases, they refuse to make the journey at all.

“The road is a nightmare. During the rainy season, it becomes completely unusable. Pregnant women, the sick, farmers—everyone suffers,” said another concerned resident.

This is what the residents of Nkontomire have to say

……….CUE IN…………..

The Assembly Member for Nkontomire Electoral the area, Hon Charles Amankwah said several petitions and engagements with relevant authorities have not yielded any meaningful response.

“I have used all the channels available to me—letters, personal engagements, Assembly meetings. But nothing has changed. We can’t continue like this,” he stressed.

Mr. Amankwah warned that if no urgent measures are taken, the community may face severe social and economic setbacks that could lead to unrest.

He is therefore calling on the government, the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Assembly, NGOs, and benevolent individuals to prioritize Nkontomire and help lift the community out of hardship.

As the cries of Nkontomire grow louder, residents are hoping their voices will finally travel beyond the hills and forests surrounding them—and reach those in power with the authority to make a change.
