“We Are Neglected” – Subin Constituency NDC Members Appeal to President Mahama for Job and Business Support

A group of aggrieved members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Subin Constituency of the Ashanti Region has made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani and the party’s leadership to extend more direct support to the grassroots.

Speaking at a press conference held in Kumasi, the members expressed frustration over what they described as years of neglect and lack of recognition, especially when it comes to benefiting from key social intervention programmes such as the Ghana School Feeding Programme and access to business support schemes.

Leading the charge was Mrs. Zainabu Ibrahim, the Women Organizer for the Subin Railway Polling Station, who did not mince words in highlighting the struggles of grassroots members who continue to sacrifice for the party despite being overlooked. “We have been loyal to the NDC for years, and we continue to work hard on the ground, yet when it comes to the implementation of key interventions like the School Feeding Programme, we are completely left out,” Mrs. Ibrahim lamented. “It is disheartening that our loyalty has not translated into support. We feel abandoned.”

She noted that, despite operating in an NPP-dominated region like Ashanti, NDC grassroots workers in constituencies such as Subin have remained resolute and have continued to mobilize support for the party. However, that dedication, she said, has not been met with any form of reward or empowerment from the top hierarchy.

According to Mrs. Ibrahim, the time has come for the leadership of the party, especially the president John Dramani mahama to recognize the efforts of grassroots party faithful and implement deliberate strategies to empower them socially and economically.

“The grassroots are the backbone of the party. If we are not strengthened and supported, how do we mobilize for victory in 2024?” she asked. “There is an urgent need to decentralize party interventions and channel support directly to the constituencies.”

Other members at the press conference echoed similar sentiments. Several individuals took turns to express their displeasure with what they believe is a growing pattern of favoritism and centralized benefits distribution that excludes active but struggling members in opposition-stronghold areas.

One concerned member emphasized the economic hardship faced by women in the constituency, many of whom are involved in small-scale trading and informal businesses but lack capital to grow.

“We are calling on President Mahama to remember us in the Subin Constituency,” the member pleaded. “We need business support. We need access to loans with low interest rates. The women here are trying to survive through petty trading, but without capital, it’s impossible. We cannot continue to be left behind.”

The group stressed that such support does not only uplift lives but also strengthens the party’s base ahead of the crucial 2024 general elections. They suggested that a robust and targeted empowerment programme could serve as a powerful tool to boost grassroots morale and enhance the NDC’s campaign reach in challenging regions like Ashanti.

The press conference concluded with a unified call on the national leadership of the NDC to listen more attentively to the voices of its foot soldiers and take urgent steps to implement welfare and empowerment initiatives tailored to the realities of grassroots members across the country. “We’re not asking for luxury—we are asking for fairness, inclusion, and the resources to continue fighting for the NDC in this part of Ghana,” Mrs. Ibrahim concluded.
