WASSCE 2022: 49,873 students fail English, 43,767 fail mathematics

According to a statement released by the West African Examination Council (WAEC), 252,502 representing 60.39 percent of the students who sat for the 2022 WASSCE scored by A1 and C6 in English Language with 256,264 of the total number of student scoring the same grades for Mathematics. The figure represented 61.39 percent of the total number of candidates.

260,335 of the students scored between A1 and C6 for Integrated Science while 298,327 representing 71.51 of the total number of students scored same for the Social Studies.

Meanwhile, 49,873 students failed in English Language, 43,767 of them failed Mathematics, 28,072 failed Integrated Science while 40,364 failed Social Studies.

A total number of 422,883 candidates made up of 203,753 males and 219,130 females from 977 schools entered for the examination. This figure is 5.25% lower than the 2021 entry figure of 446,352. A total number of 2,818 (0.67 %) of the candidates who registered were absent from the examination.

According to the statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Mrs. Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, for the English Language, the students who sat for the examination recorded a 57.34 percent pass rate in 2020, 54.08 percent in 2021 and 60.39 percent in 2022.

For mathematics, there was a 65.71 percent pass rate for 2020, 54.11 percent in 2021 and 61.39 percent in 2022.

For Integrated Science, 52.53 percent of the students passed in 2020, 65.70 percent in 2021, and 62.45 percent in 2022.

For Social Studies, 64.31 percent of students passed in 2020, 66.03 percent in 2021 and 71.51 percent in 2022.

According to WAEC, it shows “an upward trend in the performance of candidates at Grade C6 and better in Social Studies over the three-year period (2020-2022). English Language, Mathematics (Core) and Integrated Science, showed a fluctuating trend in the performance of candidates over the three-year period (2020-2022).”
