UW: Shops and House Rents Increased by Landlords

Some Landlords have increased room rents in parts of Wa and and other Municipalities Including Jirapa to augment returns on their rent as a result of prices of Some building materials and services in the Country.

According to some landlords who spoke with Upper West Media Team on request for Anonymity, they indicated that the rent is a business and as a result wouldn’t want to be at the losing end. Some other landlords added that prices of building materials such as cement, zinc, wood, electricity, sand, stones etc have gone up and as a result renovating the houses will demand more cash capital.

A single room in some busy parts of Wa such as Nakore, Kpongu, Kambali, Napogbakolee used to go for Ghc700, some landlords have increased rent from Ghc700 to Ghc1,200 in some areas whilst others have move to Ghc1,500 calculated in Months.

Shop owners in the other hand have also increased their rent with some shops going for Ghc3,000 in Wa. Owners of the shops blamed cost of building materials and property rate.

Some stakeholders have however condemned the hikes in rent of shops stating that the Development will affect prices of goods and services, the Stakeholders Including traders suggested cost of renting shops Should be reduced in order for prices of goods and services to come down.

Prices of Cement are still high despite stability in the dollar rate and Reduction in fuel prices.
