The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has honored Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Running Mate for the 2024 general elections, by naming a newly constructed hostel after him. The gesture, which highlights his exceptional contributions to Ghana’s education sector, was unveiled at a grand ceremony on the university’s campus.
The state-of-the-art hostel, now named the “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Hostel,” stands as a symbol of his impact on tertiary education infrastructure. The facility, designed to accommodate over 5,000 students, aims to alleviate accommodation challenges on campus while fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Kofi Ohene Konadu, Chairman of the UPSA University Council, highlighted the pivotal role Dr. Prempeh played during his tenure as Minister for Education. He credited Dr. Prempeh for championing projects that expanded access to quality education and enhanced infrastructure at tertiary institutions, including UPSA.
“Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s tenure as Minister for Education was marked by a relentless commitment to improving access to education and creating an enabling environment for learning. This hostel stands as a testament to his dedication to infrastructure development in tertiary education,” Dr. Konadu stated.
He further emphasized that the new hostel exemplifies the impact of effective leadership in addressing the growing demand for student accommodation in Ghana’s universities.

Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, reiterated Dr. Prempeh’s enduring contributions to Ghana’s education system. He lauded his leadership in implementing transformative policies, including the Free Senior High School initiative, which has significantly increased enrollment in tertiary institutions.
“Dr. Prempeh’s impact on Ghana’s education is indelible. Naming this hostel after him is our way of immortalizing his contributions,” said Professor Amartey.
This recognition comes three years after UPSA awarded Dr. Prempeh an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in July 2021, acknowledging his sterling leadership and dedication to advancing education in the country.
