‘Unite to End Digital Violence’: MTN Ghana Marks 16 Days of Activism with Nationwide Awareness Drive

MTN Ghana has launched the 2025 edition of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, placing a national spotlight on the urgent need to curb rising digital abuse. This year’s observance is being held under the theme “Unite to End Digital Violence Against Women and Children,” with activities rolled out across the country to promote online safety and responsible digital behavior.

The official launch took place in Accra and brought together more than 100 students from the Police Depot Cluster of Schools at Tesano. Addressing participants, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, stressed that the campaign is centered on protecting all individuals—particularly women and children—who are most vulnerable to online-related violence.

She noted that while physical gender-based violence is widely recognized, society must now confront the alarming rise in digital forms of abuse. “We are already familiar with physical forms of gender-based violence. However, as more of our life is spent online, so has abuse also moved to the digital space, showing up as cyberbullying, harassment, and other harmful online actions, most of which disproportionately affect women and girls,” Madam Wiafe stated.

She added that although MTN strives to ensure that everyone enjoys the benefits of a modern, connected life, it is equally committed to ensuring that the digital space remains safe. “Being connected should be a positive and empowering experience. Anything that causes harm or negativity is something we must all work together to eliminate,” she emphasized.

MTN Ghana is partnering with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) and the Cyber Security Authority to intensify public awareness on the impact of harmful online behavior, as well as the responsibility of citizens to contribute to a safer digital environment.

Speaking at the event, ACP Owusuaa Kyeremeh, Director of DOVVSU, raised concerns about the increasing scale and severity of digital violence. She explained that with a single click, someone can spread harmful videos, steal personal information, or send threats that violate another person’s freedom and dignity.

According to her, young women and girls are especially exposed to online harassment, coerced sharing of intimate content, hacking, and the non-consensual circulation of private images—many of which go unreported due to fear, shame, or lack of support. She urged the students to take a stand: “Do not be bystanders. Become the generation that stops digital violence.”

As part of this year’s 16 Days of Activism, MTN and DOVVSU are rolling out a comprehensive national programme including regional radio interviews, school debates on preventing digital violence, film screenings, information sessions on victim support, and community engagements focusing on digital safety and violence prevention.

The launch featured an interactive cyber hygiene session led by Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi, Director of Cybercrime, alongside a representative from MTN. Students received practical cybersecurity tips and guidance on how to protect themselves from online threats. At the end of the session, the most engaged student received a tablet as a reward.

The 2025 campaign underscores MTN Ghana’s dedication to promoting responsible digital citizenship and ensuring that the internet remains a safe, empowering place for everyone, especially women and children who are often disproportionately affected by online abuse.

End.
