UNCDF and MobileMoney LTD Launch Project to Transform MSMEs with Digital Solutions

In a significant move to advance financial inclusion and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across Ghana, MobileMoney LTD has partnered with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) to implement the Leveraging Digital Ecosystems for Increased MSMEs’ Productivity project. Funded by the SDG Fund, the initiative aims to empower women and youth-led businesses in underserved communities, particularly in the Northern, Ashanti, and Western Regions, by providing access to tailored digital financial solutions and literacy programs.
Selected as one of five service providers under the project, MobileMoney LTD is tasked with developing innovative digital services that address the key challenges MSMEs face in accessing payments, loans, savings, and insurance. The partnership seeks to provide these enterprises with practical, technology-driven solutions that foster sustainable business growth and enhance financial inclusion.
Shaibu Haruna, Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney LTD, highlighted the importance of the initiative, noting that women and youth empowerment remain central to the company’s strategy. He emphasized that the collaboration with UNCDF aligns with MobileMoney LTD’s mission to drive digital inclusion for all Ghanaians while supporting sustainable development through innovative solutions. Haruna explained that market research conducted by the company revealed critical gaps in access to financial services for MSMEs, and the project represents a targeted approach to bridging these gaps. He further stated that the initiative focuses on developing and testing prototypes that will improve access to loans, savings, and insurance, ultimately ensuring that MSMEs can grow sustainably while contributing to Ghana’s SDG agenda.
The project began with capacity-building sessions facilitated by UNCDF, equipping the MobileMoney LTD team with Human-Centric Design tools and insights to guide the development of solutions that respond to the real needs of MSMEs. Following this training, the company conducted extensive market research to understand the challenges and opportunities faced by small businesses, particularly those led by women and youth. MobileMoney LTD is now advancing to the prototype development phase, where the solutions will be tested, refined, and scaled to provide greater access to financial services, enhance business growth, improve digital and financial literacy, and generate long-term positive impacts on Ghana’s economic development.
MobileMoney LTD has consistently demonstrated its commitment to women’s economic empowerment through initiatives such as the digitization of Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) groups, provision of smartphones to market women to improve business operations, and seed funding for women agents to expand their enterprises. These initiatives form part of the company’s broader agenda to foster inclusive growth and enable women’s participation in the digital economy.
Since its launch in 2009, MobileMoney LTD, a subsidiary of MTN Ghana, has served over seventeen million registered subscribers. The company offers a wide array of mobile financial services including payment solutions, remittance, Banktech, Insurtech, savings, and loans, positioning itself as a key driver of financial inclusion and economic empowerment in Ghana.
