Residents of Agyeimpra and Sofo Issac-Krom, two farming communities in the Offinso South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, are celebrating a remarkable transformation in their living conditions. The communities have received a pipe-borne water system and a toilet facility, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Agyare, popularly known as Akwasi Poku, and his wife, Mercy Dombo, collectively referred to as the Dombo Family.
This intervention marks the end of years of struggle for access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation. For decades, residents relied on the Susamu River for domestic use and drinking water. The river, often polluted, posed significant health hazards, particularly to women and children who had to wade deep into its waters to fetch water. Those who could not afford sachet water faced no alternative but to continue using the river, exposing themselves to the risk of waterborne diseases.
In addition to the completed water and sanitation project, the Dombo Family has pledged to complete the abandoned community center at Agyeimpra. This promise has further strengthened the bond between the family and the community, with residents expressing their appreciation for the support.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Boakye Ansah David, the Assembly Member for the Agyeimpra Electoral Area, expressed his profound gratitude to the Dombo Family for their intervention, which he described as a game-changer for the communities.
“Words cannot express our excitement. We now have the privilege of using clean, pipe-borne water for drinking and domestic chores. This is a significant milestone for our community,” he said.
Hon. Boakye Ansah added that the entire project, which is estimated to cost GH¢40,000, is expected to transform the lives of the residents by reducing their reliance on the Susamu River and improving sanitation standards.
The residents also shared their relief and gratitude, noting how the project has brought hope and dignity to their lives.
“The water crisis in our community was a serious problem. This project couldn’t have come at a better time. It will benefit everyone in the community, and we are truly grateful to the Dombo Family for this initiative,” a resident stated.
The intervention is expected to bring lasting relief to the people of Agyeimpra and Sofo Issac-Krom, enhancing health, reducing disease prevalence, and fostering development in the area.
This generous act by the Dombo Family underscores the importance of community-driven solutions to rural challenges. Their commitment to improving the lives of residents reflects the power of compassion and the positive impact of diaspora contributions in Ghana’s development.
