A tragic incident has plunged the community of Subreso in the Western North Region into deep mourning after two teenagers lost their lives in an abandoned illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, pit.

The victims, identified as Enoch and Junior, both aged between 18 and 19, reportedly drowned after accidentally falling into the water-filled pit under circumstances that have left residents shocked and devastated.

According to an eyewitness, Collins, the unfortunate incident occurred when the two teenagers slipped into the pit. In a desperate attempt to save them, one of their friends also entered the pit, resulting in three people being trapped at the same time. Rescue efforts by community members were immediately mobilised, but the situation proved difficult due to the depth and dangerous nature of the pit.

The victims were later retrieved and rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital for medical attention. Sadly, Enoch and Junior were pronounced dead on arrival, while the third individual survived and is said to be receiving medical care.

The incident has sent waves of fear and panic through Subreso, with residents expressing anger and concern over the continued existence of uncovered galamsey pits in and around the community. Many described the loss as “really serious,” noting that the deaths have left families heartbroken and the entire town in sorrow.
