TVET A Key Solution to Ghana’s Unemployment Crisis, Says GTVET Deputy Director

The Deputy Director of Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (GTVET), Mr. Akwesi Abankwah, has emphasized the critical role that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) can play in addressing the high unemployment rates in Ghana.

Speaking at the Ashanti Directorate National TVET 2024 Campaign in Kumasi, Mr. Abankwah highlighted that TVET offers a transformative approach to the economy by providing employment opportunities for the country’s large pool of unemployed youth.

Mr. Abankwah pointed out that by equipping individuals with the necessary skills and training, TVET could serve as a catalyst for economic growth and empowerment. He stressed that the youth, who often face challenges in the formal job market, could benefit greatly from the vocational skills that TVET programs provide. These programs, he explained, can bridge the gap between education and employment, helping to reduce the country’s unemployment rate.

“TVET is a powerful tool that can empower the youth and create sustainable jobs. It provides the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in various industries, opening doors for employment and self-employment,” Mr. Abankwah stated.

The campaign, which was aimed at raising public awareness about the significance of TVET in shaping the future of Ghana, also featured other key figures.

Mr. Mark Kakraba Ampeh, Chairman of the TVET Council, took the opportunity to elaborate on the diverse services and training opportunities offered through TVET. He emphasized how such programs are tailored to meet the demands of the labor market, making the graduates of TVET institutions more employable and better prepared to contribute to the economy.

“TVET is not just about acquiring technical skills; it is about equipping the youth with the right mindset and entrepreneurial abilities to thrive in the job market,” said Mr. Kakraba Ampeh.

The National TVET 2024 Campaign is part of a broader initiative to increase the visibility and impact of TVET programs in Ghana, promoting them as a powerful tool for national development.

In his remarks, Lawyer Charles Owusu, CEO of Petroleum Hub, emphasized the importance of industry-specific training, particularly in sectors like petroleum and energy, which require specialized skills. He encouraged stakeholders to collaborate with TVET institutions to ensure that the youth are trained in areas that align with Ghana’s key industries.

“By focusing on sectors like petroleum, energy, and technology, we can ensure that TVET programs prepare the youth for the industries that are driving the country’s growth,” Lawyer Owusu said.

The campaign in Kumasi marks a significant step in raising awareness about the value of TVET and encouraging more young people to consider it as a viable option for career development. With increasing youth unemployment in Ghana, TVET presents a timely and effective solution to provide practical training and equip young people with the skills needed to excel in today’s competitive job market.

Through continued investment and support for TVET programs, Ghana can harness its youth potential, reduce unemployment, and accelerate its economic development.
