Tragedy at Yaw Nkwanta: Teenager Found Dead in Abandoned Galamsey Pit

A 19-year-old young man has met his untimely death after reportedly falling into an abandoned mining pit at Yaw Nkwanta near Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The deceased, identified as Philemon Okofor Ahene, was found dead on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, around 2:30 p.m. Reports indicate that Philemon had accompanied two colleagues to an illegal mining site in the area shortly before the tragic incident occurred. However, the exact circumstances leading to his death remain unclear.

His lifeless body was retrieved from the pit and conveyed to the Frimpong Boateng Mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The Toase Police Command has since commenced investigations to unravel the true cause of death and establish whether foul play was involved.

Meanwhile, the grieving family has expressed deep suspicion over inconsistencies in the accounts provided by individuals who were with the deceased at the time of the incident. According to them, the details surrounding Philemon’s death do not add up, prompting calls for a thorough and transparent investigation.

The unfortunate incident has once again reignited public concern over the dangers posed by abandoned and unregulated galamsey pits scattered across the country. Residents say such pits continue to threaten lives, especially among the youth who frequent these areas for illegal mining activities.

Authorities are being urged to intensify monitoring and reclamation efforts to prevent further loss of lives.
