Tragedy at University of Ghana: Law Student Sheriff Ibrahim Dies Suddenly During LSU Week Games

A vibrant celebration at the University of Ghana turned tragic when Sheriff Ibrahim, a final-year law student, collapsed and died suddenly while participating in sporting activities organized as part of the Law Students Union (LSU) Week celebrations.
The unfortunate incident occurred during the Dean’s Cup, a key event in the week-long festivities designed to promote unity, camaraderie, and wellness among law students. Sheriff, described by many as a bright, passionate, and well-loved member of the PFD400 class, reportedly collapsed just before kickoff and could not be revived despite efforts to save him.
Shockwaves Across Campus
News of the tragedy first broke on Radio Universe’s X (formerly Twitter) page, and was later confirmed by Edem Agbana, Member of Parliament for Ketu North and a close acquaintance of the deceased. In a heartfelt tribute, the MP expressed disbelief and grief:
> “A friend joined his law school mates for fun games. Just before kickoff, he collapsed and died. Such a vibrant soul, gone in a moment. Life is fleeting. May God help make our short stay here worthwhile. Rest In Peace, Sheriff.”
The university community was left reeling in the aftermath of the incident, with students, faculty, and alumni expressing deep sorrow and disbelief.
Official University Statement
In a solemn statement released hours after the incident, the University of Ghana expressed its profound sadness:
> “Today has shaken us in ways we could never have imagined. What began as a joyful celebration of unity and community during our LSU Week has turned into a day of immense sorrow. Events Cancelled and Burial Held
In response to the tragedy, all remaining LSU Week activities, including a celebratory dinner planned for the evening, were immediately canceled out of respect for Sheriff and his grieving family.
Following Islamic customs, Sheriff was laid to rest shortly after his passing. A memorial vigil has been scheduled for Monday, June 9th, 2025 at 6 PM on campus, where friends, colleagues, and faculty members will gather to honor his memory and legacy.
