Tragedy at Aboabo: Woman Crushed to Death by Long Vehicle While Crossing Busy Highway

A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a woman believed to be in her mid-30s at Aboabo, a bustling suburb in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The heartbreaking incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 29, 2025, when the victim was attempting to cross the ever-busy Airport–Anloga Junction Highway near the Aboabo Post Office. Eyewitnesses say the woman was hit and crushed by a long vehicle loaded with electrical cables.

According to onlookers who spoke to OTEC News reporter Kwame Agyenim, the woman was on foot and appeared to be in a hurry to get across the road when the truck, which was said to be descending a slope, knocked her down, killing her on the spot.

“She was just about to get to the other side when the vehicle appeared suddenly. There was a loud noise, and when we rushed there, she was already dead,” a distressed eyewitness recounted.

The driver of the vehicle, whose identity has not been disclosed as of press time, reportedly stopped after the accident. Passersby and local residents quickly gathered at the scene, causing a temporary disruption to traffic flow on the busy stretch of road.

Officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Airport Division, arrived shortly after the incident to cordon off the area and begin initial investigations. Health officials who were called to the scene confirmed the woman’s death and arranged for her body to be transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The identity of the deceased is yet to be officially established, but police say they are working to notify the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked renewed concerns about pedestrian safety in the Aboabo area, especially at the stretch near the Post Office, where traffic is known to be heavy and chaotic. Many residents have long called for the construction of pedestrian crossings or footbridges to reduce such avoidable tragedies.

“This road is too dangerous. Cars speed here all the time, and we don’t have a proper crossing point. How many more people must die before the authorities act?” another resident lamented.

The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident, while the vehicle involved has been impounded for further inspection.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution and adhere to speed limits, especially in densely populated urban areas.
