Traders, Shoppers Benefit as KMA Rolls Out HIV and Diabetes Screening for World AIDS Day

As part of the nationwide observance of World AIDS Day, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with the Ghana AIDS Commission, on Friday organized a large-scale free health screening exercise at Asafo Market, one of Kumasi’s busiest commercial hubs.
The initiative targeted traders, shoppers, and market operators, aiming to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, promote early detection, and encourage healthy living. Nurses from the Maternal and Child Health Unit at Pampaso led the outreach, providing education on HIV transmission, safe sexual practices, and the importance of regular testing to prevent new infections.

In a bid to address broader public health concerns, the health team also screened participants for blood sugar levels, offering guidance on maintaining a balanced diet, healthy eating habits, and lifestyle practices to prevent diabetes. This dual focus underscored the government’s commitment to holistic health promotion at the community level.

Madam Felicia Osei Agyemang, Deputy Director and Gender Desk Officer at the KMA, expressed her satisfaction with the turnout and the positive reception of the exercise. She reiterated that the Assembly remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote awareness, prevent disease, and empower communities with accurate health information.

Beneficiaries of the exercise expressed heartfelt appreciation to both the KMA and the Ghana AIDS Commission. Traders and shoppers praised the initiative for providing vital health services free of charge and commended the Assembly for bringing critical health interventions directly into the community. One beneficiary noted, “This screening is very helpful. It has made me aware of my health status, and I am thankful to the KMA and Ghana AIDS Commission for their support.”

The exercise concluded with a strong appeal to all market operators and members of the public to prioritize regular health screenings, adopt safer lifestyle habits, and encourage friends and family to participate in future health awareness programmes.

This outreach forms part of the Government of Ghana’s broader strategy to reduce new HIV infections while promoting community wellness through proactive education and preventive health measures.
