Teenage Boy Kills Mother Over Missing Memory Card in Sefwi Wiawso

A tragic incident has shaken the community of Wassa J.Y No.1 in the Sefwi Wiawso District, as a 17-year-old Junior High School pupil, Emmanuel Gyan, has been arrested for allegedly killing his mother, Faustina Agyeiwaa, over a missing mobile phone memory card.

According to the Sefwi Wiawso police, Gyan accused his 52-year-old mother of taking his memory card, which she denied. Consumed by rage, the teenager allegedly grabbed a pistol and repeatedly struck her on the head until she collapsed. In a chilling follow-up, Gyan reportedly attempted to burn his mother’s body using naked flames.

The horrific crime, which occurred on Monday, January 15, has left residents in shock and raised concerns about rising violence among the youth. It was Gyan’s own father, Isaac Somuah, 58, who, assisted by a neighbor, Stephen Amponsah, handed him over to the police.

Authorities have since taken the suspect into custody as investigations continue. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Bibiani Government Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.

Speaking on the incident, some community members expressed deep concern over the increasing aggression among young people, citing the influence of violent content, lack of parental control, and declining moral values as possible causes.

“We are sitting on a ticking time bomb if we don’t address youth violence in our society,” one resident lamented.

Security experts and child psychologists have also weighed in, calling for urgent interventions such as improved conflict resolution education in schools, better parenting, and stricter regulation of access to harmful media content.

The police have assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter, urging parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the emotional and psychological well-being of their children.

This tragic incident serves as a wake-up call for society to take decisive steps in curbing youth-related violence before more innocent lives are lost.
