Teacher Leadership Institute Graduates Over 30 Educators, Championing Collaborative Classroom Practices

Over 30 dedicated educators have successfully graduated from the Teacher Leadership Institute, an initiative aimed at redefining classroom leadership through innovative and collaborative teaching practices. The graduation ceremony, held over the weekend, celebrated the achievements of teachers who have undergone intensive leadership training to become transformational figures in their respective schools and communities.

The Executive Director of the Institute, Mr. Brantuo Sekyereh, delivered a compelling keynote address, urging the newly graduated educators to shift from traditional authoritarian teaching methods to more inclusive and participatory approaches. According to him, teachers must evolve beyond being the “boss” in the classroom and instead become active participants in the learning process.

“Effective teachers are not those who simply command and instruct, but those who guide and learn alongside their students,” Mr. Sekyereh emphasized. “The classroom should be a space of mutual respect, collaboration, and shared purpose.”

Adding to the theme of student empowerment, Cassandra Willis, Director of Partnership Collaboration at Dominion University College, encouraged teachers to create room for student voices in their classrooms. She highlighted that when students are given the opportunity to express themselves, they develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills — all essential for 21st-century learning.

“A classroom where students feel heard is a classroom where learning thrives,” Ms. Willis noted. “We must nurture environments where learners are not just recipients of information but active contributors to knowledge creation.”

Graduates of the program shared how the training has positively impacted their teaching styles and classroom dynamics. Many reported significant improvements in classroom management, with strategies that promote inclusivity, reduce disruptions, and increase student engagement.

“I used to struggle with managing student behavior, but now I have the tools to create a more supportive and responsive classroom,” said one graduate. “Students now feel more comfortable and willing to participate.”

Another teacher highlighted the value of adopting a student-centered approach, where learners take greater ownership of their educational journey. “This training has completely transformed my perspective. I now facilitate learning rather than dictate it, and the results have been remarkable,” she stated.

The training also fostered a strong spirit of collaboration among the educators. Teachers formed peer networks to exchange ideas, share resources, and support one another’s professional development, creating a sustainable ecosystem of shared growth.

The Teacher Leadership Institute’s curriculum focuses on building competencies in instructional leadership, policy advocacy, and association leadership. By equipping teachers with these tools, the institute hopes to produce educators who are not only effective in the classroom but also influential in shaping educational policy and reform.

As the education landscape in Ghana and beyond continues to evolve, the Teacher Leadership Institute stands out as a beacon of transformation, committed to nurturing teacher leaders who will drive positive change and inspire the next generation of learners.
