The Takoradi District Court has sentenced a second-year student of the Takoradi Technical Institute (TTI), Emmanuel Sam, popularly known among his peers as Agogo, to six months imprisonment for stabbing a teacher on campus.

The court, presided over by His Worship Michael Ampadu, handed down the custodial sentence on Thursday after Sam was found guilty of assault and causing harm.

In addition to the jail term, the court ordered the student to pay GH₵3,000 as compensation to the injured teacher. Failure to comply with this order will attract an additional three months imprisonment. Sam has also been directed to pay a separate fine of GH₵2,400 to the court.

The incident, which shocked the school community and the wider Takoradi township, occurred earlier this month when Sam allegedly attacked the teacher during an altercation on campus. The teacher, whose name has been withheld, sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

The ruling has sparked mixed reactions among parents, students, and education stakeholders, with many calling for stricter measures to curb rising cases of student violence in schools. Authorities at TTI have since intensified guidance and counseling programs to restore discipline and ensure the safety of staff and students.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) is closely monitoring the case, emphasizing that violence against teachers will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
