Ashanti Region NDC Members Storm DVLA Office Over Return of Former Regional Director Amos Abeka

Tensions erupted today at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) regional office in Kumasi, as aggrieved members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region stormed the premises to protest the controversial return of former Regional Director, Amos Abeka.

Wearing red armbands to signify their anger and dissatisfaction, the demonstrators accused DVLA authorities of undermining due process and transparency. They claimed that a farewell party had already been organized for Mr. Abeka, marking the formal end of his tenure, and that his deputy had been named the new substantive Regional Director.

However, the NDC members said they were shocked to discover that Mr. Abeka had been granted an additional year in office despite the appointment of his successor — a move they described as irregular and a breach of administrative norms.

Speaking to the media during the protest, Mr. Hopeson Keku, Ashanti Regional Research Director for the NDC, firmly rejected what he termed “a clandestine attempt to impose leadership without due process.”

“We are here to register our displeasure. A new Regional Director has been appointed, and a farewell party was organized for Mr. Abeka. His sudden reinstatement is unacceptable. We will not sit idly by while established protocols are ignored,” Mr. Keku said.

He further warned that if authorities do not reverse the decision, the group would return on Monday to forcefully install the newly appointed director themselves.

The protest temporarily disrupted operations at the DVLA office, prompting an increased security presence to prevent any escalation. Some staff members, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed concern that the tension could negatively impact service delivery if left unresolved.

Attempts to reach DVLA national leadership for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.

The Ashanti Region remains a critical political stronghold, and disputes over public office appointments are often viewed through a highly charged political lens. Stakeholders are urging calm and strict adherence to established procedures to safeguard peace and stability.
