The Department of Surgery has been adjudged the overall best dressed department at the 2026 Ghana Month celebration organised by the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, marking a colourful and memorable climax to a month-long series of culturally enriching activities.

The celebration, which spanned the entire month of March, formed part of deliberate efforts by hospital management to deepen Ghanaian cultural identity among staff while promoting unity, collaboration, and team spirit across departments. It also aimed to create an engaging and inclusive work environment that celebrates diversity and national pride.

Throughout the month, themed activities were held on a weekly basis, each carefully designed to highlight different facets of Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and to encourage active staff participation. The programme commenced on March 5 with a Traditional/African Wear Day, where staff proudly showcased an array of vibrant and authentic Ghanaian attire.

This was followed by “Rep Your Tribe Day” on March 13, which provided an opportunity for staff to celebrate their ethnic backgrounds and cultural uniqueness, reflecting the diversity within the hospital community. On March 19, the celebration continued with “Rep Your Jersey/Rep Korle Bu/Rep Your School Day,” where participants displayed affiliations to their favourite sports teams, the institution, and their respective alma maters.

The final themed event, “Old School Day,” held on March 27, brought a nostalgic touch to the celebration as staff donned retro outfits, recreating styles from past decades and adding excitement and creativity to the programme.

In addition to the themed dress days, a variety of fun and engaging activities were organised to enhance participation and camaraderie among staff. Food competitions featured prominently, with Mr Patrick Jones emerging as the winner of the waakye eating contest, while Mr Gideon Foli secured the top prize in the kenkey eating competition. Both contests attracted enthusiastic participation and contributed to the festive atmosphere.

Other competitions included musical chairs, which was won by Inpraise Akomeah from the Directorate of Medical Affairs, and a dancing competition, where Ms Louisa Ahiafor of the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department impressed judges with her performance to claim victory.

An exhibition segment also formed a key part of the celebration, providing a platform for staff to showcase their entrepreneurial ventures. Participants displayed and sold a wide range of products from their side businesses, highlighting creativity, innovation, and enterprise within the hospital workforce.

Winners across all categories were honoured with certificates of recognition, as well as packs of drinks and bottles of sparkling wine in appreciation of their participation and achievements.

The celebration culminated in a communal kenkey-eating session that brought together the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, the Deputy Director of Supply Chain and Procurement, directors, and staff in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. The gathering further strengthened interpersonal relationships and bridged the gap between management and staff.

Participants commended management and the Public Relations team for the successful organisation of the programme, describing it as a commendable initiative that promotes unity, cultural appreciation, and staff engagement. They also urged hospital leadership to sustain and further enhance the Ghana Month celebration in the years ahead.
