COP Abiba Yaa Kyere Twumasi Sarpong (Rtd) Urges Parental Involvement in Children’s Education at 10th Yaa Kyere Foundation Quiz

The Executive Director of the Yaa Kyere Foundation and retired Commissioner of Police, COP Abiba Yaa Kyere Twumasi Sarpong, has passionately called on parents to actively participate in the upbringing and education of their children, describing their role as critical to shaping responsible and successful future leaders.
Speaking at the 10th Annual Yaa Kyere Foundation Quiz Competition held for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates, COP Sarpong stressed that parents must not leave the total responsibility of children’s development to teachers alone.
According to her, parental engagement at home — especially monitoring children’s behavior, movements, and emotional changes — is essential in identifying early signs of problems that could derail their progress.
“Parents must work hand in hand with teachers by keeping a close eye on their children’s day-to-day activities. This partnership is vital in building strong values and ensuring discipline,” she stated.
The event, which brought together BECE candidates from various communities including Apaah, Yonso, Kyekyewere, and Mampong, served as a platform to promote academic excellence and discipline through competitive learning. The quiz, held annually by the foundation, aims to motivate students and prepare them for their final examinations.
COP Sarpong also urged the students to embrace Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a tool for learning rather than a means of entertainment and distraction. She emphasized the need for students to make responsible use of digital platforms to improve their academic performance.
“Technology can be a blessing or a curse depending on how we use it. I encourage all students here to harness its power for positive academic advancement,” she added.
Also speaking at the event, the Headmistress of Asokore T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, Hajia Isha Nyantakyi Boakye, echoed similar sentiments. She emphasized the need for strong collaboration between parents and teachers in monitoring students’ academic journeys.
“Parents must see teachers as partners. When there is open and regular communication, it helps us all to support the child better — academically, socially, and emotionally,” she said.
The Yaa Kyere Foundation Quiz Competition has over the years gained recognition for its role in supporting basic school education and nurturing young talents in the Ashanti Region. It is part of the foundation’s broader commitment to improving educational outcomes and instilling discipline in young learners.
Participants and teachers alike expressed gratitude to the foundation for its continuous support and pledged to uphold the values instilled through the initiative.
The program ended with award presentations to the best-performing schools and students, with calls for continued investment in education at the grassroots level.
