Somanya Technical and Vocational Institute in Crisis: Students Learn Under Trees Amid Severe Hardships

Students of Somanya Technical and Vocational Institute are enduring harsh learning conditions as they are forced to study under trees due to a severe lack of classrooms. The school, which was upgraded to a Technical and Vocational Institute in 2020 after transitioning from a Social Welfare training center for persons with disabilities, is now facing critical infrastructure and welfare challenges.

With a student population of 846, including 508 boarders and 338 hostel residents, the school is struggling to provide even the most basic facilities for quality education.

Overcrowded Dormitories and Health Risks

Despite having a boarding facility originally designed to house only 120 students, the school currently accommodates 508, leading to severe congestion. This overcrowding has resulted in frequent disease outbreaks and poses a major health risk to students.

Lack of Classrooms and Furniture

The absence of proper classrooms has left many students with no choice but to study under trees, making it difficult to concentrate, especially during harsh weather conditions. The situation is worsened by the fact that the school has no desks, forcing parents to buy plastic chairs for their children, who often have to place their books on their laps to learn.

During examinations, the situation becomes even more distressing, as students are forced to sit on the bare floor to write due to the unavailability of furniture.

No Dining Hall, No Beds, No Supervision

The school also lacks a dining hall, leaving students with inadequate arrangements for meals. Additionally, there are no proper beds in the dormitories, forcing many students to endure uncomfortable sleeping conditions.

For those residing in hostels, the absence of school supervision has led to rising social vices, further worsening the already troubling situation.

No Development Since 2020

Shockingly, since the school’s elevation to a Technical and Vocational Institute, not a single classroom block has been constructed to address these challenges. Meanwhile, school authorities have declined to comment on the issue.

The dire situation at Somanya Technical and Vocational Institute calls for urgent intervention from the government, NGOs, and other stakeholders to ensure students have access to a conducive learning environment.
