Seven Military Officers Remanded in Connection with Deaths of Two Civilians in Kumasi Assault Incident

Seven military officers, including senior personnel and a driver, have been remanded in custody over the tragic deaths of two civilians, following an alleged assault at the hands of the officers. The Suame District Court in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, heard the case on Tuesday, 8th April 2025, where the accused officers were charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The incident, which took place on 28th March 2025, began when three young men—Kwame Adu (popularly known as Ogee), Kwabena Sarfo, and Christian Obiri Yeboah (also called Kofi Yesu)—were arrested by military officers. The men were allegedly accused of stealing an iPhone belonging to a civilian.

The three men were taken to the 4th Infantry Battalion (4BN) barracks, where they were reportedly beaten severely by the officers. Two of the victims, Kwame Adu and Kwabena Sarfo, were later found dead in a bush in Danyame, a suburb of Kumasi. The third victim, Christian Obiri Yeboah, survived the ordeal and was later found receiving treatment.

Following the discovery of the bodies, police received information about their whereabouts and promptly dispatched officers from the Suame Division to retrieve the bodies. The remains of the deceased were taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue for identification. It was through the efforts of the victims’ families that Kwame Adu and Kwabena Sarfo were identified.

Christian Obiri Yeboah, the surviving victim, was able to recount the assault he and the others suffered. According to his statement, the three young men were violently beaten after being taken to the military barracks, an assault that led to the deaths of his companions.

In the aftermath of the incident, the military officers were arrested and charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. During their appearance at the Suame District Court, the prosecution requested that the accused officers be remanded in prison custody while investigations continue. However, the defense lawyers for the accused officers argued that they should be held in the custody of the Military Police instead. The presiding judge, after hearing both sides, ruled that the accused should be remanded in the custody of the Military Police until the next court hearing, which has been scheduled for 22nd April 2025.

Relatives of the deceased victims, who were present in the courtroom, have been vocal in demanding justice for their loved ones. They have expressed frustration and sorrow over the deaths of Kwame Adu and Kwabena Sarfo, urging the authorities to ensure a fair and thorough investigation.

The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting concerns about the conduct of military personnel and the need for accountability in incidents involving civilian deaths at the hands of security forces. Investigations are ongoing, and the families of the victims continue to seek justice for the tragic deaths of the two young men.
