Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly Empowers 45 Persons with Disabilities with Livelihood Support

The Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly has launched a targeted economic empowerment initiative aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the district, as part of broader efforts to reduce poverty and promote inclusive development.

Under the programme, the Assembly distributed productive assets—including deep freezers, fufu-pounding machines, sewing machines, and plumbing tools—to 45 beneficiaries. The support is designed to enable recipients to establish new income-generating ventures or expand existing small-scale businesses, thereby fostering economic independence and social inclusion.

Speaking to the media, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sekyere Kumawu, Hon. Akwasi Amankwah, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting PWDs and ensuring their full integration into both national and local development processes. He explained that the empowerment programme is a key component of the government’s social protection agenda, which seeks to create equal opportunities for all citizens, particularly vulnerable groups.

Hon. Amankwah emphasized that the Assembly would implement monitoring mechanisms to ensure the proper use of the distributed items. “Our objective is to help beneficiaries build sustainable livelihoods, not merely provide short-term relief,” he stated. He added that the Assembly would continue designing interventions that strengthen the productive capacity of PWDs in the district.

The DCE encouraged beneficiaries to make the most of the items provided, noting that their success would reinforce the need for ongoing and expanded support for PWDs across the district.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Esther Mensah expressed sincere gratitude to the government and the Assembly for the timely intervention. She described the support as a crucial boost that would help many PWDs overcome economic challenges and achieve self-reliance.

Mrs. Mensah assured the Assembly that the items would be used responsibly and productively to improve living conditions and contribute meaningfully to the local economy. She also appealed for continued support, including skills training, to further strengthen the capacity of PWDs in the district.

Beneficiaries expressed optimism about the initiative. Samuel Owusu, a 32-year-old tailor, noted that the sewing machine he received would enable him to increase output and take on more orders, thereby improving his livelihood.

The empowerment programme by the Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly marks a significant step toward inclusive development, ensuring that persons with disabilities are equipped to participate actively in the district’s socio-economic life.
