The Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly has brought renewed hope to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the district after presenting financial assistance and essential support items to 100 beneficiaries under the government’s Disability Fund.

The colourful event, held at the forecourt of the Assembly, was led by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Kwasi Amankwaa, who underscored the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity, empowerment, and the creation of equal opportunities for all.

“We believe in creating an environment where every individual, regardless of their abilities, can live with dignity and contribute to our community’s growth,” Hon. Amankwaa stated in his address. He explained that the initiative was aimed at uplifting PWDs by addressing their financial, educational, and health needs while promoting transparency in the disbursement process.

Direct Support to Enhance Accountability

Unlike previous approaches where funds were sometimes channeled through committees or individuals, the Assembly this time directly engaged approved suppliers to provide the necessary items. This, according to Hon. Amankwaa, was to ensure accountability, effective use of resources, and value for money.

“This Assembly is committed to transparency and efficiency. Every cedi allocated must benefit the intended beneficiary,” he emphasized.

Breakdown of Support

The support package was structured to meet different needs across the PWD community:

Business Support: Thirty-five beneficiaries received a total of GH₵100,000, with each person taking home GH₵2,000 to either start or expand their businesses.

Medical Support: Fifteen PWDs benefited from medical assistance to cater for urgent health needs and treatments.

Educational Support: Twenty students, including those in special schools and a training college, received financial aid to help them pursue their education without undue hardship.

Beneficiaries who received wheelchairs, crutches, and other essential support items could not hide their joy, with many describing the intervention as timely and life-changing.

Voices of Gratitude

Madam Regina Ampomaa, Chairperson of the Persons with Disabilities in the Sekyere Kumawu District, commended both government and the Assembly for scaling up the disability fund. She urged her fellow beneficiaries to use the support wisely to improve their lives and avoid wasteful practices.

“This is an opportunity for us to show that with the right support, we can rise above limitations and contribute meaningfully to society,” she said.

Some beneficiaries, speaking to the media, expressed their heartfelt gratitude, describing the intervention as a step towards independence and self-reliance.

A Step Towards an Inclusive Future

The ceremony concluded on a hopeful note, with beneficiaries leaving the venue visibly uplifted and determined to make good use of the assistance provided. For many, this was not just financial or material support—it was a symbol of dignity, inclusion, and empowerment.

By empowering PWDs through education, health, and business support, the Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly has taken a bold step towards creating a more equitable society where no one is left behind.
