The Principal of Sampa Nursing Training College (NTC) in the Bono Region, Mr. Albert Opoku, has been celebrated at the Ministry of Health’s 5th Nursing and Midwifery Excellence and Hall of Fame Awards 2025, held at the Global Dream Hotel in Tamale.

Mr. Opoku received the distinguished “Nursing and Midwifery Education and Research Excellence Award” in recognition of his outstanding contribution to research, academic leadership, and the training of nurses and midwives in Ghana. His commitment to evidence-based practice and innovation in healthcare education earned him this national recognition.
As an academic, Mr. Opoku has authored and co-authored several scholarly works, with one of his notable publications being “Strategies for Corrective Misinformation about Vaccination and Increasing Coverage: Relevance for Health Education” in the British Journal of Healthcare and Medical Research, Vol. 12 (04), pp. 309–316. His research has been instrumental in addressing challenges of vaccine misinformation, while also promoting effective health education strategies to improve public health outcomes.
In an interview after the ceremony, Mr. Opoku expressed gratitude for the honour and underscored the importance of research in education and healthcare delivery. He explained that research is a vital tool for generating new knowledge, shaping the learning experience of students, and ensuring quality patient care. According to him, Ghana’s health sector can only achieve greater progress if students, educators, and practitioners embrace research as a culture and apply it to practice.
The Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards, organised annually by the Ministry of Health, bring together stakeholders from across the country to celebrate professionals whose dedication, service, and innovations continue to transform healthcare delivery. The 2025 edition highlighted the role of research and innovation in shaping the future of nursing and midwifery in Ghana.
The recognition of Mr. Opoku has been hailed as a milestone achievement not only for him as an individual but also for Sampa Nursing Training College. Staff, students, and stakeholders of the institution described the award as a reflection of his visionary leadership, which continues to elevate the college’s reputation as a centre of academic and professional excellence in the Bono Region and beyond.
