Salaga South MP Calls for Stricter Regulation of High-Rise Billboards and Worker Safety
The Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimiah, has raised concerns about the growing number of high-rise billboards along major highways and the lack of proper regulations to safeguard workers involved in their construction.
Addressing the media, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimiah commended the MP for Domeabra-Obom, Hon. Isaac Awuku, for his timely statement on the issue. She noted that many critical matters in the country are often taken for granted, especially those relating to industry and business operations.
According to her, there is no doubt that the increasing number of high-rise buildings and towering billboards across the country’s skylines presents a significant challenge. She stressed that Ghana has not yet implemented the necessary requirements to protect the young people engaged in the construction of these structures.
She pointed out that driving along the Tema Motorway through to the N1 Highway reveals a growing number of massive billboards and mounted video screens.
Hon. Ibrahimiah further stated that these billboards display a wide range of advertisements, including funeral announcements, wedding posters, church conventions, and Muslim events. She urged the relevant ministries—particularly the Ministry of Housing and the Ministry of Local Government—to engage local assemblies, who are responsible for issuing billboard permits.
She emphasized that these assemblies must require proper documentation from businesses seeking permits, especially regarding safety standards and insurance coverage. She noted that many businesses mistakenly believe paying for insurance is a waste, when in fact it serves as essential protection for both workers and companies.
The MP stressed that artisans working at height need reliable protection and a fallback option in case of accidents. When workers lack insurance, she said, the burden often shifts to MPs, who become the default support system for affected families.
Hon. Ibrahimiah called for immediate action to ensure that proper systems are put in place to protect workers, businesses, and the wider public.
