Salaga South MP Backs Gender Ministry Bill to Improve Social Services for Vulnerable Ghanaians

The Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimiah, has expressed strong support for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection’s proposed bill aimed at enhancing the delivery of social services in Ghana.

Addressing Parliament, Hon. Zuwera urged her colleagues to support the passage of the bill, emphasizing its importance in streamlining and improving services to the most vulnerable populations in the country.

According to her, the bill clearly outlines the categories of beneficiaries of social services and interventions, including persons with disabilities, the homeless, and those chronically affected by poverty. She described the bill’s scope as comprehensive and inclusive.

She specifically highlighted Clauses 14 to 27 as particularly critical, noting that they provide for the establishment of a unit to manage the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme. While the LEAP programme has been operational for some time, she pointed out that the absence of a dedicated management mechanism has resulted in inefficiencies and accountability gaps.

“With the creation of this management unit, the LEAP programme will be better structured, ensuring transparency and accountability,” she stated. “This is why I strongly urge members of Parliament to support the Honourable Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection in passing this bill into law, to ensure effective delivery of social services to the people of Ghana.”
