Safety Excellence: Asanko Gold Mines Crowned Champions of 2025 National Inter-Mines First Aid Competition

Asanko Gold Mines Limited has reaffirmed its position as a leader in safety and community preparedness by emerging as the overall winner in the 2025 National Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition, organized by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

The prestigious event, which was hosted by Asanko Gold Mines at its mining site, brought together staff and community teams from large-scale mining firms across the country to demonstrate their knowledge, skill, and response capability in emergency management and lifesaving techniques.

This year’s competition featured two main categories — the staff category and the community teams category. In the highly competitive community teams contest, Asanko Gold Mines emerged as champions with an impressive score of 98 percent. They were followed by Abosso Goldfields Damang with 89 percent, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine with 85.5 percent, and the Ghana Manganese Company, which obtained 27 percent.

Participating companies included Golden Star Wassa, Asanko Gold Mine, AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi, and the Ghana Manganese Company Limited, all of which presented both staff and community representatives for the event.

In the staff category, Golden Star Wassa secured the top spot with 59 percent, closely followed by Asanko Gold Mine with 58.5 percent, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi with 52 percent, and AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem with 50 percent.

The oral presentation segment of the competition is scheduled to take place next week in Accra, where teams will showcase their theoretical understanding of first aid procedures live on Ghana Television (GTV).

Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, the Director for Analysis, Research, and Finance, Mr. Christopher Opoku Darko, praised the participants for their outstanding performance, emphasizing that the competition goes beyond technical training to instill a shared culture of safety across the mining industry.

He stated, “A mine is not truly safe unless the community around it is also safe. That is why we continue to engage community teams and empower especially women to actively participate in safety competitions. These exercises save lives, both at work and at home.”

The Managing Director of Asanko Gold Mine Limited, Dr. Charles Amoah, in his remarks, expressed profound gratitude to the Ghana Chamber of Mines for granting Asanko Gold the honour of hosting this year’s competition. He underscored the company’s unwavering commitment to maintaining high safety standards across all its operations.

“At Asanko, safety defines who we are. It shapes our culture, drives our discipline, and reflects our commitment to excellence. Hosting this year’s competition is therefore not just an honour but a clear demonstration of our belief that safety is a shared duty across the entire mining industry,” Dr. Amoah remarked.

He further noted that safety is not a one-day activity but a continuous process that must become a way of life for every worker and community member involved in mining operations. He assured that Asanko Gold Mines will continue to prioritize the well-being of its staff, contractors, and host communities through regular training and capacity-building initiatives.

The Paramount Chief of the Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area, in whose jurisdiction the event was held, commended both the Ghana Chamber of Mines and Asanko Gold Mines for promoting a safety-first culture within the mining sector. He described the initiative as one that not only strengthens the relationship between mining companies and their host communities but also helps prevent avoidable injuries and fatalities.

He added, “Safety awareness is critical in every community. What Asanko Gold and the Chamber of Mines have done today moves the industry one step closer to achieving zero harm. I am proud that this important event was hosted here in Manso Nkwanta.”

The 2025 National Inter-Mines First Aid and Safety Competition was held under the theme, “Every Moment is an Ambush, Think Safety All the Time.”

The event concluded with resounding applause from participants, community members, and dignitaries, who lauded the Ghana Chamber of Mines for sustaining an initiative that continues to promote safety excellence, teamwork, and proactive emergency preparedness across Ghana’s mining sector.

Asanko Gold Mines’ victory, both as host and champion, once again underscores its steadfast commitment to protecting lives and ensuring that safety remains an uncompromising priority in every aspect of its operations.
