Road users stranded as Donkorkrom-Agordeke bridge collapses after downpour

Residents and drivers who use the Donkorkrom-Agordeke road in the Eastern Region were stranded and unable to cross over to the other side.

The heavy rains on Wednesday night into Thursday morning collapsed the only bridge connecting the road.

Residents and drivers with foodstuffs from Donkokrom to Agordeke and beyond in the Volta Region and vice versa could cross over to either side.

Drivers have been left with the decision to stay on the road for days if it has to be fixed.

Frustrated at the situation, they lamented, accusing the Kwahu Afram Plains North Assembly for negligence.

“My car has gotten stuck here since 5:00pm Wednesday evening. The District Assembly always placed plywood here as a temporary measure. They have promised to fix it tomorrow but I don’t believe them. What I see here is very bad. It can’t be fixed tomorrow, we may have to stay here for weeks and days. We vote too, we demand good roads.”

Another added: “I drive a motorbike to feed my family, they keep saying temporary measure. Is that the only language they understand? They deceive us with rubber bowl and mobile phone afterwards we can’t find them again.”

The police personnel and other residents are helping residents in dire need to walk on a piece of wood placed over the collapsed portion but that cannot hold as the collapsed portion has widened. Vehicles cannot move.

Health personnel fear the worst might happen soon.

“This isn’t the first time, it’s a national emergency. How do we do referrals if ambulance can’t move? This can increase maternal mortality cases in the long run.”

The bridge was already at a deteriorating state and occasionally supported with logs of wood.

The Kwahu Afram Plains North contributes largely to the country’s agriculture.

If the situation persists, farmers could lose produce whiles scarcity of the produce may result in high costs.

Efforts to get the Kwahu Afram Plains North DCE, Nana Ofori Koree, to respond to efforts being made to fix the bridge proved futile.
