PWDs in Afigya Kwabre South Receive Cash and Equipment Support from District Assembly

Eighty-seven persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the Afigya Kwabre South Municipal Assembly have received financial assistance and livelihood equipment from the Disability Fund of the District Assembly Common Fund, as part of government’s continued commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable groups in society.

The presentation ceremony, held on Thursday, December 18, 2025, saw beneficiaries from various communities within the municipality taking turns to receive cash grants, sewing machines, deep freezers and refrigerators aimed at enhancing their economic independence and overall standard of living.

The support package is expected to help beneficiaries engage in small-scale trading, farming and other income-generating activities, while some are also expected to channel the assistance towards meeting critical health and educational needs.

Addressing the gathering, the Afigya Kwabre South Municipal Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr. Cheslyn Nutsugah, explained that the government remains committed to sustaining the Disability Common Fund to mitigate the socio-economic vulnerabilities faced by persons with disabilities. He noted that the unusually high number of beneficiaries this year was the result of an extensive registration exercise carried out across all communities in the municipality.

According to him, the thorough registration process ensured that more eligible persons with disabilities were identified and included in the programme. He expressed confidence that the support extended to the beneficiaries would significantly reduce street begging within the municipality, stressing that the assistance provided is sufficient to enable recipients to establish or expand their livelihoods.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Afigya Kwabre South, Madam Patricia Pearl Ankrah, urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the support and desist from complaints about unemployment. She encouraged them to acknowledge the government’s intervention by investing the resources productively to improve their livelihoods and support their families.

Madam Ankrah further advised the beneficiaries to remain ambitious, disciplined and patient in managing their enterprises, noting that sustainable growth requires commitment and perseverance. She reaffirmed the Assembly’s resolve to promote inclusive development by ensuring that persons with disabilities are empowered to contribute meaningfully to local economic development.

The Disability Common Fund is a statutory allocation aimed at enhancing the living conditions of persons with disabilities by supporting economic empowerment initiatives and promoting social inclusion at the local level.
