The Government of Ghana, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, has officially broken ground for the construction of the Drobonso College of Health Sciences at Drobonso in the Ashanti Region, marking a historic milestone in the expansion of tertiary health education within the region.

The sod-cutting ceremony was performed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, on behalf of the President. The project is being funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), reflecting the government’s sustained commitment to investing in quality education and strengthening Ghana’s healthcare delivery system.

The Drobonso College of Health Sciences will be the first institution of its kind in the Ashanti Region dedicated exclusively to the training of medical, health, and allied health professionals. When completed, the college is expected to serve as a centre of excellence in health education, practical skills training, and research. It will equip students with the knowledge and competencies required to respond effectively to the evolving healthcare demands of the country.

Addressing the gathering at the ceremony, the Regional Minister emphasized that the establishment of the college aligns with the government’s broader agenda to expand access to tertiary education and develop skilled human capital. He noted that the institution will create increased educational opportunities for young people, particularly those within the Ashanti Region, while significantly enhancing healthcare service delivery across the region and beyond.

The event was attended by the Drobonsohene  Nana Dwamena Dankwah Dwebisaw, the Honourable Member of Parliament for the area, the District Chief Executive, and the Deputy Administrator of GETFund, alongside other traditional authorities, opinion leaders, and community members. Their presence underscored the strong collaboration between government and traditional leadership in advancing local development initiatives.

In his remarks, Nana Dwamena Dankwah Dwebisaw commended the government for what he described as a transformative and timely intervention for Drobonso and its surrounding communities. He warmly welcomed the project and assured the government of the unwavering support of the traditional council and the people of Drobonso toward its successful completion. He pledged that the community would fully cooperate to ensure the smooth execution of the project for the benefit of future generations.

Beyond its academic mandate, the new college is expected to stimulate local economic activity through job creation during both the construction and operational phases. It is also anticipated to position Drobonso as a growing hub for tertiary health education in Ghana.
The groundbreaking ceremony represents a decisive step in the Mahama administration’s efforts to build a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready healthcare system anchored on well-trained professionals. It further highlights the government’s commitment to equitable regional development through strategic investments in education and infrastructure.
