President Mahama Orders Full Digital Transformation of Ghana’s Hajj Operations, Condemns Exploitation of Pilgrims

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Hajj Board to immediately embrace a full-scale digital transformation of the country’s Hajj operations, insisting that the time has come for Ghana to match global standards and protect the dignity and resources of its pilgrims.

Speaking during a high-level engagement with the Hajj Board in Accra, President Mahama said that as the world evolves, Ghana cannot continue to rely on outdated systems that cause congestion, create room for fraud, and expose pilgrims to avoidable stress. He emphasized that modernizing the process is no longer optional but a national responsibility.

President Mahama urged the Board to introduce a comprehensive e-registration system, where intending pilgrims can register online without relying on agents or middlemen. According to him, such a platform would simplify the process, increase transparency, and curb manipulation at various levels.

He also called for the adoption of SMS notifications to keep every registered pilgrim informed about payment confirmations, documentation updates, visa processing, and travel schedules. This, he noted, will eliminate misinformation and ensure that every pilgrim receives timely and accurate communication directly from the Hajj authorities.

A key part of his directive was the creation of an official Ghana Hajj mobile application—a one-stop digital platform that allows pilgrims to register, track their application progress, verify payments, access travel details, and receive real-time updates. The President stressed that such a system would reduce human interference, improve coordination, and provide the Hajj Board with reliable data for planning future operations.

Beyond technological improvements, President Mahama was emphatic about the need to protect pilgrims—especially the poor—from exploitation. His tone grew firm as he condemned profiteering within the Hajj ecosystem.

“The Ghana Hajj must never be a source of exploitation or profiteering. It is haram to exploit the sweat of a poor pilgrim,” the President stated, stressing that many pilgrims spend years saving for the sacred journey only to suffer confusion, anxiety, or unfair treatment at the hands of middlemen or officials.

He emphasized that such practices are unacceptable and must be eradicated immediately. The President called for strict oversight measures, transparency frameworks, and disciplinary actions to prevent any abuse within Hajj operations.

President Mahama concluded his address by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the Ghanaian Hajj experience is dignified, efficient, and reflective of the spiritual significance of the pilgrimage.
