Otec School of Journalism celebrates academic excellence at 6th Graduation and Matriculation

The Otec School of Journalism and Communication Studies has celebrated its 6th Graduation and Matriculation at its premises in Asawasi, in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The colourful ceremony, held on Friday, November 28, 2025, brought together students, media professionals, parents, and community members to honour academic achievement and welcome fresh entrants into the institution.
Held under the theme “Responsible Media: A Prerequisite to National Development,” the event saw forty-five students graduating and seventy-six newly admitted students officially inducted into the school.
Speakers at the ceremony stressed the important role media plays in promoting integrity, accountability, and development in the country.
The Otec School, affiliated with Otec FM, one of Ghana’s prominent private commercial radio stations, is accredited by both the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The school runs a two-year Diploma in Journalism, equipping students with practical skills for modern media practice.
Graduating students received certificates, with exceptional performers receiving additional honours.
The highlight of the awards segment was the presentation of the Valedictorian title to Master Patrick Ofosu, who was acknowledged for his outstanding academic performance and commitment to excellence.

Addressing the graduates as the special guest of honour, the Ashanti Regional Chairperson of the Ghana Journalists Association, Mr Kofi Adu Domfe, urged them to uphold strong ethics in their professional journey.
“A responsible journalist amplifies solutions, not just problems; elevates facts over speculation; prioritises impact over sensationalism,” he said, drawing applause from the audience.
He added that responsible journalism “holds power to account without fear or favour, and champions the national interest without becoming an agent of propaganda.”
According to him, ethical practice should be reflected in fact-checking, verification rigour, balance in reportage, and commitment to public interest.
Mr Domfe reminded the graduates that their credibility would determine their longevity and impact in the media space.
“As journalists and communicators, your credibility is your most valuable asset. Lose it, and you lose your audience. Uphold it, and you become a trusted voice in shaping the national narrative,” he said.
In his address, the Principal of the school, Mr Matthew Donkor, encouraged the graduating class to embrace innovation, integrity, and service in their future pursuits.
He urged them to apply the knowledge and skills gained to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
“No matter where you find yourselves, you have your contribution to make to help the world to become a better place; regardless of the path you take, we hope that you will succeed,” Mr Donkor said.
He further charged the students to become ambassadors of positive change.

“Your intelligence, skills, and innovative ways of thinking are needed in the media world and beyond. Serve and contribute wherever you find yourselves,” he emphasized, highlighting the role of journalists in shaping society.
The ceremony ended with smiles, handshakes, and promises of a brighter future, as the new graduates stepped into the professional world, inspired by the call to uphold responsibility as the foundation of impactful journalism.
