Obuasi DVLA Manager Backs New Number Plate System as Anti-Theft Measure

The Obuasi Manager of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Mr. Edwin Ofori, has thrown his full support behind the introduction of Ghana’s new vehicle registration number plate system, describing it as a major step towards curbing vehicle theft and improving road management across the country.

Mr. Ofori explained that the new number plates, which are scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026, will introduce a more secure and traceable identification system for vehicles. Under the new regime, vehicle number plates will feature a regional code at the top and an area code at the end, replacing the current format that indicates the year of registration. He noted that this modification will make it easier for security agencies to identify vehicles and track stolen cars more efficiently.

According to him, the initiative will not only enhance vehicle security but also simplify the registration process for vehicle owners. He said the new system is expected to reduce delays, eliminate duplication, and improve the accuracy of vehicle data nationwide, thereby strengthening the overall efficiency of the DVLA’s operations.

Mr. Ofori urged vehicle owners and the general public to fully support the exercise to ensure its successful implementation. He stressed that public cooperation would be crucial in achieving the objectives of the new registration system, particularly in the fight against vehicle theft.

Touching on road safety, the Obuasi DVLA Manager also cautioned drivers to exercise restraint on the roads, especially as the Christmas season approaches. He advised motorists to avoid overspeeding and reckless driving, noting that heightened travel activities during the festive period often lead to an increase in road accidents.

Mr. Ofori emphasized that adherence to traffic regulations and responsible driving would go a long way in saving lives and ensuring a safe and peaceful festive season for all road users.
