NUGS Honours Dr. Patrick Essien for Outstanding Youth Leadership and STEM Advocacy at 58th Handing-Over Ceremony

Dr. Patrick Essien, Founder and President of Molex Foundation Africa, has been honoured by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) for his outstanding contribution to youth leadership development, mentorship, and the advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Ghana.

The prestigious recognition was conferred at the 58th NUGS Handing-Over, Swearing-In, and Education Award Ceremony, a landmark national event that celebrates excellence, service, and visionary leadership within Ghana’s student movement. The honour underscores Dr. Essien’s consistent and far-reaching impact on empowering young people and preparing them for responsible leadership and national service.

Dr. Essien has, over the years, distinguished himself as one of Ghana’s most committed advocates for youth empowerment, gender inclusion, and skills-driven education. A Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) expert, environmental scientist, and seasoned public servant, his work bridges policy, advocacy, and practical interventions that directly transform lives.

Through Molex Foundation Africa, Dr. Essien has championed initiatives aimed at closing the gender gap in STEM education, particularly for young girls who face systemic barriers in accessing science and technology-related opportunities. His flagship programme, SHEROES in STEM, has emerged as a nationally recognised platform that inspires, equips, and mentors young women to pursue careers in science, innovation, and technology.

The initiative has empowered hundreds of young women across the country by building their confidence, providing access to STEM education and hands-on skills, and connecting them to mentorship opportunities with industry professionals and academic leaders. Beyond individual success stories, these interventions continue to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s human capital development and long-term sustainable growth.

At the ceremony, Dr. Essien received a Youth Leadership Recognition (Citation) in acknowledgment of his sacrifice, dedication, and unwavering commitment to mentoring young people in leadership and governance. The citation praised his consistent support for youth-focused initiatives and his strong belief in equipping young leaders with the discipline, ethical values, and knowledge required for responsible leadership and national progress.

Dr. Essien currently serves as Deputy Director for Mining at the Environmental Protection Authority, where he continues to blend technical expertise, ethical leadership, and youth-centred advocacy in the execution of national environmental and development policies.

The NUGS honour adds to a growing list of national recognitions earned by Dr. Essien for his contributions to education, innovation, and youth empowerment. Recently, he was awarded an Honorary Recognition for STEM and Innovation at the Ghana Tech Awards in acknowledgment of his exceptional role in promoting inclusive, future-ready education and innovation-driven development.

The recognition by NUGS is not merely ceremonial but a reflection of Dr. Patrick Essien’s lifelong mission to nurture a generation of disciplined, innovative, and socially responsible leaders. His work continues to inspire students, educators, policymakers, and development partners across Ghana.

As the country looks towards a future anchored on innovation, technology, and inclusive leadership, Dr. Essien’s impact stands as clear evidence that visionary leadership rooted in service, mentorship, and purpose can transform lives and help shape the nation’s development trajectory.
