In a press conference held at the headquarters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Accra, the Communications Director of the party, Richard Ahiagba, launched an attack on the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of plotting to rig the upcoming 2024 general elections. According to Mr. Ahiagba, the NDC’s tactics are driven by a desperate desire to reclaim power, even at the expense of Ghanaians’ democratic rights.
Mr. Ahiagba alleged that a document obtained by the NPP showed that the opposition party had been actively working on a secretive strategy aimed at disrupting the democratic process. The NPP’s communications director claimed that the NDC has been implementing these plans since 2021, utilizing underhanded, crude, and unfair tactics to achieve its objective of winning the 2024 elections.
He further stated that the leaked document outlines the NDC’s systematic plan to manipulate the political landscape. “The National Democratic Congress has been working with the leaked document since 2021, playing a disruptive, unfair, and outright crude tactic to aid its capture of power in 2024,” Mr. Ahiagba said during the press briefing.
Ahiagba went on to accuse the NDC of undermining public trust in Ghana’s democratic system. He urged Ghanaians to take a strong stand against what he described as the opposition’s abuse of the political process, stating that the NDC’s actions reflect a betrayal of the people’s trust. He called on voters to reject the NDC’s approach and ensure that such extreme political strategies are not rewarded at the polls.
“The NDC’s strategy amounts to abusing the people’s trust in the democratic system of government,” Ahiagba remarked. “Voters must, as a result of this knowledge, punish this gross abuse of trust, to deter any future opposition party from going to the extremes that the NDC has gone currently.”
The NPP’s Communications Director further alleged that the evolving dynamics in parliament, particularly with the NDC seeking to gain majority status, were part of the opposition’s broader scheme to manipulate power structures. He accused the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, of supporting the NDC’s agenda, further complicating the political landscape.
“The active support of Mr. Speaker is part and parcel of the design of this secret document,” Ahiagba claimed, adding that the NDC’s efforts to dominate parliamentary proceedings were a direct threat to the nation’s democratic stability.
The accusations come at a time when political tensions are rising ahead of the December 2024 general elections. The NPP and NDC, the two major political forces in the country, are gearing up for what is expected to be a fiercely contested election. Both parties have already begun positioning themselves strategically, with each side accusing the other of undermining democratic norms.
In response to the NPP’s accusations, the NDC has yet to issue an official statement, but political analysts suggest that the party may refute the claims as a preemptive attempt by the ruling government to divert attention from its governance challenges ahead of the elections.
As Ghana prepares for another crucial election, the back-and-forth between the NPP and NDC is likely to intensify, with accusations and counter-accusations shaping the narrative. Political observers are calling on both parties to uphold democratic principles and ensure that the 2024 elections are free, fair, and transparent.
