NPP Mourns Ernest Yaw Kumi: Eastern Regional Chairman Hails Late MP as Peacemaker and Astute Politician

The Eastern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Jeff Konadu Addo, has paid a moving tribute to the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, describing him as a distinguished politician and a man of peace whose legacy will remain etched in the annals of the party and the Akwatia constituency.

Mr. Kumi, aged 40, passed away on Monday, July 7, after being admitted to Lister Hospital in Accra on Sunday evening. According to Mr. Konadu, the late MP had complained of heart-related pains and was taken to the hospital where he was reportedly responding to treatment. Tragically, his condition took a sudden turn for the worse, and he passed away just 30 minutes after his wife briefly stepped out to seek official permission from her workplace to care for him.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Sunyani-based Ark FM during the evening news on Monday, Chairman Jeff Konadu expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the youthful legislator, calling it a “shocking and untimely loss not only to the NPP but to Ghana’s democracy.”

“He was a peacemaker in every sense,” Chairman Konadu stated. “In a political climate often dominated by insults and unnecessary tension, Ernest chose the path of diplomacy, dialogue, and unity. He was one of the most respectful and focused politicians I have worked with.”

The Regional Chairman emphasized that the late MP’s unwavering dedication to both the New Patriotic Party and the people of Akwatia was evident in every aspect of his public life. He noted that Ernest Yaw Kumi approached his parliamentary duties with a high sense of responsibility, and his energy and commitment to development projects in his constituency were unmatched.

“He never sought to divide; rather, he built bridges. Whether in internal party matters or national discourse, his voice was always one of reason and peace,” Mr. Konadu recounted.

Chairman Konadu further revealed that arrangements are underway to meet with the bereaved family in the coming days to determine the appropriate next steps regarding funeral arrangements and the party’s involvement.

He expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Eastern Regional executives of the NPP to the widow, children, and entire family of the late MP, assuring them of the party’s full support during this difficult period.

“The NPP has lost a rising star and a selfless servant. Ernest Yaw Kumi’s legacy will continue to inspire not only current members of the party but also future leaders who will look up to his exemplary character, humility, and passion for service,” he concluded.

Mr. Kumi, who had served just a term in Parliament, was regarded as one of the promising young voices within the party and was actively involved in constituency development projects and grassroots engagement until his untimely death. His passing has left a deep void in both his constituency and within the ranks of the NPP.
