Nkawie Chief Launches GH₵100,000 Emergency Ward Project to Revive Healthcare Delivery

The Chief of Nkawie, Oheneba Kwame Akoto, has launched a GH₵100,000 Emergency Ward Project at the Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital in a bold effort to revive healthcare delivery and strengthen emergency medical response in the Atwima Nwabiagya South District of the Ashanti Region.

The sod-cutting ceremony, held on Friday, October 10, 2025, drew hundreds of residents, traditional leaders, health professionals, and government officials who gathered to witness a historic initiative set to transform the face of healthcare in Nkawie and its surrounding communities.

The decision to embark on the project was triggered by alarming reports and a personal inspection of the hospital’s emergency unit by the Chief, who was deeply disturbed by its deteriorating condition. Expressing his dismay, Oheneba Kwame Akoto said what he saw at the facility was unacceptable and demanded immediate action.

“What I witnessed was unacceptable. Our people deserve better,” he said firmly. “As leaders, we cannot sit idle while our people suffer. This project is about restoring hope, dignity, and access to quality healthcare.”

In keeping with his commitment to community development, Oheneba Kwame Akoto has taken a hands-on approach by personally financing the first phase of the construction with an initial GH₵100,000. His leadership has inspired his subjects to contribute massively to the cause, donating 200 bags of cement to support the project’s early stages.

The new Accident and Emergency Ward, once completed, will provide modern emergency care infrastructure, equipped with advanced medical facilities to handle accident victims and critically ill patients with greater efficiency. The facility is expected to reduce referral delays, improve survival rates, and enhance the overall healthcare capacity of the Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital.

The Atwima Nwabiagya South District Chief Executive (DCE), who graced the ceremony, commended the Chief for his exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to his people’s well-being. He assured the gathering of the Assembly’s full collaboration and hinted that efforts were underway to seek additional support from the central government and the Office of the President to complement the Chief’s initiative.

In a passionate appeal, Oheneba Kwame Akoto called on philanthropists, corporate entities, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to lend their support to the project, emphasizing that healthcare development should be a shared responsibility.

“This isn’t just a building. It’s a lifeline — a place where lives will be saved daily,” he said. “I’m calling on everyone who believes in humanity to support this cause. Together, we can give Nkawie the healthcare system it truly deserves.”

Residents of Nkawie and nearby communities expressed deep gratitude to their Chief for his compassion and proactive leadership. Many described him as a visionary traditional ruler who goes beyond ceremonial duties to take tangible steps toward improving the lives of his people.

The hospital’s management and health professionals also praised the Chief’s intervention, describing it as timely and lifesaving, especially at a period when the hospital’s emergency unit struggles to accommodate the increasing number of accident and trauma cases in the district.

As work begins on the GH₵100,000 Emergency Ward Project, optimism is high among the people of Nkawie that this initiative will not only improve emergency healthcare delivery but also serve as a model for other traditional leaders across Ghana.

By leading with compassion and action, Oheneba Kwame Akoto has once again proven that true leadership lies in service — a legacy that will forever shape the future of healthcare in Nkawie and beyond.
