In a remarkable demonstration of visionary leadership and commitment to community welfare, the Chief of Nkawie, Oheneba Kwame Akoto, has fulfilled his promise by cutting the sod for the construction of a GH₵100,000 state-of-the-art Accident and Emergency Ward at the Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital in the Atwima Nwabiagya South District of the Ashanti Region.

The historic ceremony, which took place on Friday, October 10, 2025, marked a turning point in the quest to enhance healthcare delivery and emergency response in the Nkawie enclave and its surrounding communities.
The project, fully initiated and personally financed by Oheneba Kwame Akoto, follows a distressing discovery of the deplorable state of the hospital’s emergency facilities. The Chief, after personally inspecting the hospital’s emergency unit, was deeply troubled by what he described as an unacceptable condition for patient care.
“What I witnessed was unacceptable. Our people deserve better,” he emphasized, expressing his determination to change the situation by investing directly into the construction of a modern facility.
To kickstart the project, the Chief has committed an initial GH₵100,000 from his personal resources to fund the first phase of construction. His initiative has already ignited a wave of communal support, with his subjects contributing 200 bags of cement toward the project — a gesture that underscores the spirit of unity and shared responsibility within the Nkawie traditional area.
The ground-breaking event attracted several dignitaries, including the Atwima Nwabiagya South District Chief Executive (DCE), who lauded the Chief’s extraordinary leadership and pledged the Assembly’s full support to ensure the project’s timely completion. The DCE also hinted at possible collaboration with the central government and the Office of the President to secure additional funding and resources for the project.

In his address, Oheneba Kwame Akoto passionately appealed to philanthropists, corporate institutions, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to join hands in making the project a reality, describing it as more than just a building.
“This isn’t just a building. It’s a lifeline. It’s about saving lives and restoring dignity to our healthcare system,” he said, calling on all stakeholders to prioritize the well-being of the people through collective effort.
When completed, the Modern Accident and Emergency Ward is expected to significantly improve emergency healthcare delivery in the district, providing timely and efficient medical attention to accident victims and critically ill patients. It will also reduce the pressure on referral hospitals within the Ashanti Region, positioning the Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital as a major hub for emergency care.
Residents of Nkawie and its adjoining communities have commended their Chief for his foresight and selflessness, describing his action as a true reflection of leadership that prioritizes people’s welfare over personal gain. Many expressed optimism that the project would usher in a new era of development and attract further investment in the health sector.
The sod-cutting ceremony concluded with a strong sense of hope and unity, as the Nkawie Chief reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the progress of his people. His initiative has not only set a benchmark for traditional leadership but also rekindled community-driven development across the Ashanti Region.
The Nkawie Chief’s intervention stands as a testament to the power of leadership rooted in compassion, accountability, and vision — a legacy that will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the health and well-beingof generations to come.
