Nana Akomea Sakyi Tutu II Sets Record Straight on Football Field and Land Sale Allegations

The Chief of Abuontem in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, Nana Akomea Sakyi Tutu II, has broken his silence over recent allegations that he has sold portions of community lands and seized the town’s football field for personal use. The chief, visibly concerned about what he described as deliberate attempts to tarnish his reputation, clarified that the relocation of the football field and other developmental decisions taken under his leadership were made solely in the interest of the community and not for personal or political gain.

Addressing journalists and elders at the Abuontem palace, Nana Sakyi Tutu II expressed disappointment over what he called “false propaganda” being spread by a few disgruntled individuals whose past actions had compromised the integrity of the community’s land administration. According to him, the people behind the recent protests are the same individuals who unlawfully sold community lands before his enstoolment as chief, and they now fear accountability as he seeks to restore order and transparency in land management.

He stated emphatically that no land, including the community cemetery or the football field, has been sold since he assumed leadership. “These allegations are baseless and politically motivated,” he said. “Not a single piece of Abuontem land has been sold under my authority. I took an oath before the ancestors and the people to protect this land, and I will never betray that sacred trust.”

Touching on the controversial relocation of the football field, Nana Sakyi Tutu II explained that the traditional council made the decision after extensive consultations with elders, opinion leaders, and sections of the youth. He noted that the move was part of a broader development plan to construct a modern community palace, durbar grounds, and a multi-purpose cultural center on the land that previously served as the football field.

“The field relocation is not an act of selfishness or greed. It is a strategic development decision aimed at giving Abuontem a befitting palace and a social center where we can host community events, festivals, and other traditional activities,” he clarified. “This project will not only enhance the image of Abuontem but will also serve as a hub for unity and cultural pride.”

To address concerns raised by the youth regarding sports and recreation, the chief announced that a new site has already been secured for the construction of a standard football pitch. He revealed that preparatory works on the land have begun and that the new facility will include proper goalposts, dressing rooms, and spectator stands. He added that the traditional council has also reached out to native philanthropists, corporate bodies, and sports development organizations to support the project.

“The youth are the heart of this community,” he said. “We are building a better and more spacious field that will not only promote sports but also attract tournaments and bring development opportunities to Abuontem. This is how we combine tradition with progress.”

Nana Akomea Sakyi Tutu II also used the occasion to appeal for calm and unity among residents. He urged community members not to be swayed by misinformation or politically driven propaganda designed to undermine his leadership and stall development efforts. He encouraged anyone with genuine concerns to approach the palace for dialogue rather than resorting to public protests or divisive actions.

He further reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and accountability in the management of all community lands, emphasizing that every piece of land belongs to the people of Abuontem and must be used responsibly for their collective benefit. “No chief can succeed without the support of his people,” he said. “I am not against criticism, but it must be constructive and based on truth, not lies. I have come to serve Abuontem, not to enrich myself.”

The chief also expressed gratitude to the elders, youth leaders, and residents who have remained steadfast and supportive despite the recent tensions. He assured them that his administration will continue to prioritize education, infrastructure, and youth empowerment as key pillars of Abuontem’s development agenda.

In conclusion, Nana Akomea Sakyi Tutu II called on all indigenes of Abuontem, both home and abroad, to unite behind the common goal of progress and to work hand in hand to build a peaceful and prosperous community. “Abuontem’s future is bright if we choose unity over division, truth over propaganda, and development over destruction,” he declared. “Let us stand together, for our land is our heritage — and I will protect it with every strength and wisdom I have.”
