NAIMOS TASKFORCE STRIKES ‘YELLOW FACE’ GALAMSEY SITE IN WASSA ABREHYIA

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) taskforce yesterday executed a decisive dawn operation targeting a notorious illegal mining enclave popularly known as ‘Yellow Face’ in Wassa Abrehyia, Western Region.

The operation, described by authorities as a “surgical strike,” aimed at flushing out illegal miners, locally known as galamseyers, and curbing the associated environmental destruction and criminal activities in the area. Reports from the scene indicate that the sudden and unexpected presence of the NAIMOS team sent shockwaves through the settlement, compelling galamsey operators and local inhabitants to flee in panic to avoid arrest.

During the raid, the taskforce discovered and destroyed multiple makeshift structures and mining equipment that were being used for illicit gold extraction. In addition to mining paraphernalia, the operation also exposed the widespread use of illegal drugs and explosives, including dynamites, by operators at the site—a practice that poses significant risks to both lives and the environment.

A spokesperson for NAIMOS emphasized that the operation was part of an ongoing series of interventions designed to disrupt illegal mining networks and restore law and order in affected communities. “This raid is a clear message that the fight against illegal mining and its associated social vices is ongoing. We will continue to conduct targeted operations to safeguard lives, the environment, and community safety,” the spokesperson stated.

Environmental and local community activists have lauded the operation, noting the urgent need to address the growing illegal mining menace in the Western Region, which has led to deforestation, water pollution, and unsafe working conditions.

NAIMOS has vowed to sustain such operations in the coming weeks, warning that any individuals found engaging in illegal mining activities, drug use, or unsafe handling of explosives will face strict legal consequences.

The successful raid at ‘Yellow Face’ marks another significant step in the government’s campaign to eradicate galamsey activities and promote lawful, sustainable mining practices across Ghana.
