MTTD Ashanti South Educates Drivers, Road Users to Ensure Accident-Free Christmas

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Ashanti South Regional Command, has intensified public education on road safety as part of measures to prevent accidents during the Christmas festivities.

The sensitisation exercise, carried out within the Bekwai Municipality and surrounding communities, targeted commercial and private drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians and other road users, as vehicular movement is expected to increase significantly during the festive season.

Speaking to the media in an interview,  the Ashanti South Regional MTTD Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Elizabeth Amponsah, said the initiative was aimed at creating awareness about the dangers associated with road traffic accidents and encouraging responsible road use to protect lives during the Christmas period.

She noted that excessive speeding, careless driving, wrongful overtaking, lack of concentration and fatigue remain major causes of road crashes, particularly during festive seasons when drivers are under pressure to make multiple trips.

ASP Amponsah urged drivers to reduce speed, remain alert and exercise patience on the road, stressing that tolerance and strict adherence to road traffic regulations are critical to preventing avoidable accidents.

She cautioned drivers against wrongful overtaking and reckless manoeuvres, describing them as major contributors to fatal crashes, and reminded motorists that a single moment of negligence could result in devastating consequences for families and communities.

The Regional MTTD Commander further advised drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, avoid driving under stress or fatigue and prioritise the safety of passengers, pedestrians and other road users throughout the festive season.

Drivers and road users who interacted with the police officers expressed appreciation to the MTTD and the Ashanti South Regional Police Command for the timely education, describing the exercise as informative and reassuring.

The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to continuous public education and enforcement of road traffic laws to ensure a safe, peaceful and accident-free Christmas and New Year celebration in the Ashanti South Region.
