MTN Partners DOVVSU and Cyber Security Authority to Fight Rising Digital Violence

MTN Ghana has launched the 2025 edition of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with a strong focus on tackling the growing menace of digital violence affecting women and children. This year’s campaign, themed “Unite to End Digital Violence Against Women and Children,” is being observed across the country with a series of nationwide educational and advocacy activities.

At the launch event held in Accra, over 100 students from the Police Depot Cluster of Schools at Tesano participated in an engaging programme aimed at raising awareness about online safety. Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, explained that the focus for 2025 is to protect individuals—especially women and children—from violence occurring in digital spaces.

She noted that while physical forms of gender-based violence are widely recognized, society must also confront the increasing shift of abuse to online platforms. “We are already familiar with physical forms of gender-based violence. However, as more of our life is spent online, so has abuse also moved to the digital space, showing up as cyberbullying, harassment, and other harmful online actions, most of which disproportionately affect women and girls,” Madam Wiafe stated.

She emphasized MTN’s responsibility to make the internet a safer place for all users. “Being connected should be a positive and empowering experience. Anything that causes harm or negativity is something we must all work together to eliminate,” she added.

The campaign is being carried out in close partnership with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) and the Cyber Security Authority, both of which are working with MTN to intensify public education on digital safety and online abuse.

Speaking at the event, ACP Owusuaa Kyeremeh, Director of DOVVSU, warned about the growing risks associated with digital violence and its devastating impact on women and girls. “With a single click, someone can spread harmful videos, steal personal information, or send threats that infringe on another person’s freedom,” she explained.

She further revealed that girls and young women are especially vulnerable to harassment, online pressure to share sexual content, hacking, and the non-consensual sharing of private images—many of which remain unreported. ACP Kyeremeh urged students to be proactive in addressing digital abuse: “Do not be bystanders. Become the generation that stops digital violence.”

As part of this year’s observance, MTN and DOVVSU are rolling out extensive awareness activities nationwide. These include coordinated radio interviews across various regions, school debates focused on digital violence prevention, film screenings, community engagement sessions on online safety, and information campaigns aimed at supporting victims of digital abuse.

During the launch, students participated in a highly interactive cyber hygiene and cybersecurity training session led by Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi, Director of Cybercrime, together with an MTN representative. The session covered essential online safety practices and ways young people can protect themselves from cyber threats. The most actively engaged student received a tablet as a prize.

This year’s 16 Days of Activism campaign reaffirms MTN Ghana’s commitment to promoting responsible digital behavior and ensuring that the internet remains a safe, empowering space—particularly for women and children who are disproportionately affected by online abuse.

End.
