MTN MoMo Unveils 2026 Anti-Fraud Strategy to Bolster Digital Security and Customer Awareness”

MTN Mobile Money Limited (MoMo) has announced the rollout of its 2026 Anti-Fraud Strategy, a comprehensive initiative aimed at strengthening digital security and enhancing customer awareness amid rising mobile money fraud in Ghana. According to the Cybersecurity Authority, losses from online fraud surged to GH₵4.4 million in the first quarter of 2025, nearly doubling the GH₵2.4 million recorded during the same period in 2024, highlighting the urgency of robust countermeasures.

At the Mobile Money Advocacy Group Capacity-Building Workshop in Accra, MTN MoMo Chief Executive Officer, Shaibu Haruna, stressed that combating fraud requires both technological solutions and proactive customer education. “Fraud cuts across every financial sector, and most cases are socially engineered through misinformation,” he said. “Beyond deploying advanced tools, our strongest weapon remains customer education.”

A cornerstone of MTN MoMo’s strategy is the nationwide “Shine Your Eye” campaign, which uses drama, music, and community engagement to educate customers on fraud prevention. The initiative has already reached thousands of Ghanaians, and the company intends to expand its reach in 2026 to cover more rural and semi-urban areas where mobile money adoption continues to grow. “We have already engaged customers nationwide, and we intend to expand the campaign to ensure every MoMo user is empowered with the knowledge to protect themselves,” Mr. Haruna added.

Supporting the effort, Dr. Philip Oti-Mensah, Managing Director of Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), emphasized the critical role mobile money agents play in financial inclusion and pledged the bank’s continued support. He highlighted the need to reduce transaction costs to improve the profitability of agents and ensure sustainable service delivery. “Mobile money agents are central to financial inclusion, and making transactions more affordable strengthens their businesses while serving the broader community,” he said.

Financial Planner at Axis Pensions Trust, Anita Wiafe, also advised mobile money agents to consider structured pension schemes to secure their long-term financial future. She noted that informal sector workers often lack retirement protection and underscored the importance of building a safety net early.

Edward Ofori-Agyemang, President of the Mobile Money Advocacy Group, explained that the workshop was designed to equip agents with the knowledge and tools necessary to safeguard their businesses from fraud. “Our goal is to ensure that every MoMo agent across Ghana is well-informed and protected from fraud risks,” he said.

MTN MoMo’s 2026 Anti-Fraud Strategy reflects the company’s broader commitment to creating a safe, trusted, and inclusive digital financial ecosystem. By combining advanced technology, customer education, and collaboration with banks, pension providers, and community stakeholders, MTN MoMo aims to reduce fraud, protect agents and customers, and strengthen financial inclusion across Ghana.
