MTN MoMo Honours 200 Partners Across Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo and Bono East, Unveils Strong Anti-Fraud Measures

Mobile Money Limited, in collaboration with MTN Ghana, has celebrated 200 outstanding partners across the Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo and Bono East Regions at its end-of-year Partners’ Awards Ceremony, while unveiling robust new measures aimed at strengthening security and combating fraud within Ghana’s mobile money ecosystem.

The ceremony was organised to recognise the vital contributions of technology partners, merchants, agents and partner banks whose collective efforts have been instrumental in driving the growth, resilience and sustainability of MTN MoMo over the years.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Nii Adotey Mingle General Manager, Sales for the Northern Sector of MTN Ghana, said the annual awards scheme is a deliberate effort to appreciate partners who have remained committed to the MTN MoMo journey.

According to him, the success chalked up by Mobile Money Limited would not have been possible without strong collaboration, mutual trust and dedication from its wide network of partners. He stressed that the awardees represent the backbone of MTN MoMo’s operations and the driving force behind the company’s continued leadership in digital financial services.

Mr. Mingle disclosed that a total of 200 awardees were honoured this year, drawn from the Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo and Bono East Regions. He described the number as a reflection of the depth and reach of MTN MoMo’s partnerships across the middle belt of the country.

He explained that while some awards categories were announced publicly, others were deliberately kept as surprises, with recipients only learning of their honours at the point of presentation. This, he said, added excitement and prestige to the ceremony.

Beyond recognition, Mr. Mingle highlighted MTN MoMo’s broader vision of building a strong and sustainable fintech ecosystem in Ghana. He disclosed that Mobile Money Limited is working closely with the Government of Ghana and other key stakeholders to support innovation within the fintech space, including plans to sponsor startups to accelerate growth and industry-wide development.

He emphasized that MTN MoMo’s partnership model is built on shared growth, bringing together fintech companies, government institutions and private sector players to elevate Ghana’s digital financial services industry to global standards.

Touching on service reliability, Mr. Mingle assured customers that MTN MoMo operates on a highly robust and resilient platform, supported by continuous collaboration with stakeholders and close cooperation with security agencies. This, he said, ensures swift and independent responses to emerging challenges, particularly fraud-related incidents.

He cautioned customers to remain vigilant and protect their personal information, stressing that the only official MTN MoMo customer care number subscribers should respond to is 0244-300000. He warned customers to ignore any other calls requesting personal details and reiterated that under no circumstances should a customer disclose their MoMo PIN to anyone.

Also speaking to the media, Mr. Abdul-Majeed Rufai, Senior Manager, Commercial Mobile Money, announced a series of decisive measures being rolled out to sanitise the MTN MoMo agent network and further protect customers.

According to Mr. Rufai, MTN MoMo is preparing to undertake a nationwide re-registration of all agents, following the discovery of cases where some agents had been conducting transactions using other people’s personal details. He revealed that in some instances, individuals arrested for fraudulent activities later resurfaced and continued operating under different names.

He explained that the re-registration exercise is intended to identify and remove agents involved in fraud, while ensuring that only verified, genuine and compliant agents remain within the ecosystem. This, he noted, will help create a safer, freer and more trustworthy environment for both customers and agents.

Mr. Rufai further disclosed that MTN MoMo is reviewing its cash-out transaction process to align with industry best practices. He said that while other mobile money networks already use QR codes and agent IDs for transactions, MTN MoMo plans to roll out a similar system as part of a major exercise scheduled to begin in 2026.

Under the new system, customers will no longer be required to provide their mobile numbers during transactions. Instead, customers will simply scan the agent’s QR code or enter the agent’s unique ID to complete transactions and leave the agent point without disclosing any personal details.

He explained that the decision was informed by observations that fraudsters often obtain customers’ phone numbers by standing close during transactions, memorising the details and later using that information to scam unsuspecting victims.

By eliminating the need for customers to disclose their phone numbers, Mr. Rufai said MTN MoMo expects to significantly reduce fraud incidents across the ecosystem. He added that the QR code and agent ID transaction system will be fully implemented once the agent re-registration exercise is completed.

Meanwhile, some of the awardees expressed heartfelt appreciation to MTN Ghana and Mobile Money Limited for recognising their dedication and unwavering support. They described the awards as a strong motivation to continue delivering quality service and contributing to the growth of mobile money services in their respective communities.

At the ceremony, the overall best awardees received a cash prize of GH¢20,000, while other award recipients were each rewarded with GH¢5,000, alongside plaques and citations.

Mobile Money Limited concluded the event by thanking all partners and customers for their continued trust and support, reaffirming its commitment to innovation, security and strong partnerships as it continues to deepen financial inclusion and grow Ghana’s digital financial services landscape.
