MTN Group, in partnership with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the African Editors Forum (TAEF), has launched the Pan-African Media Innovation Programme (MIP), a landmark initiative designed to transform journalism across the continent and empower media practitioners with the tools to thrive in a digital-first era.

 

The programme represents the expansion of the successful MTN Nigeria MIP, which was introduced in 2022 as a pilot to strengthen newsroom innovation and leadership. Having delivered measurable impact and nurtured a vibrant alumni community, the initiative is now being rolled out at the continental level, positioning MTN and its partners as key players in supporting media sustainability and strengthening democratic institutions across Africa.

 

The Pan-African MIP is a certified twelve-week fellowship delivered independently by UJ and TAEF. It combines rigorous academic study with immersive practical experiences, striking a balance between theory and practice. Participants will receive training on critical areas including newsroom innovation, digital transformation, media sustainability, ethics, law, entrepreneurship, and the role of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in journalism. Alongside formal instruction, the programme features newsroom visits, masterclasses by industry leaders, innovation labs, and collaborative projects that foster problem-solving and cross-border partnerships.

This launch comes at a pivotal time, as the African media sector faces mounting challenges from disinformation, misinformation, shrinking revenue streams, and fragile press freedoms. The organisers say the programme directly supports the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions a continent that is democratic, inclusive, and driven by access to reliable and credible information.

“For Africa’s digital future to be truly transformative, we must invest not only in connectivity but also in the institutions that uphold trust, accountability, and public interest,” said Nompilo Morafo, MTN Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer. “Through the Pan-African MIP, MTN is proud to invest in a new generation of media leaders who will innovate, collaborate, and strengthen journalism’s role as a cornerstone of democracy.”

 

The University of Johannesburg described the partnership as an extension of its mission to deliver socially impactful education. A spokesperson explained that the programme is academically rigorous yet directly connected to the real-world challenges facing African journalists, making it uniquely positioned to prepare participants for leadership in a complex media environment.

 

The African Editors Forum (TAEF) also endorsed the initiative, calling it a timely and strategic effort to reinforce independent journalism. “Independent media remain the foundation of democratic societies. Through partnerships like the Pan-African MIP, we can build resilient and collaborative media ecosystems capable of meeting today’s information challenges,” a representative stated.

 

The unveiling took place at the MTN Innovation Centre in Johannesburg, where members of the MIP Alumni Association of Nigeria attended to share their experiences and success stories. Their presence highlighted the evolution of MIP from a national pilot to a full-fledged Pan-African programme with the potential to transform the continent’s media landscape.

 

The first continental cohort of fellows will begin training in 2026, opening a new chapter in the development of African journalism. With MTN’s investment and the academic and editorial leadership of UJ and TAEF, the initiative is set to create a strong network of African journalists equipped to fight disinformation, embrace digital transformation, and lead sustainable newsrooms.

By launching this programme, MTN and its partners reaffirm their commitment to supporting independent media, strengthening democratic institutions, and shaping a resilient future for journalism in Africa.
